Drennan Twistlock

The death of these poles is going to be corrosion on the tapered pin/threads.
Definitely cost them in something to protect them from sitting wet.

I’ve never had to coat one in varnish or hammer nails through one or start sticking rubber tubes in etc simply because I fully understand how it works and it’s obvious where problems might occur.
The collet is plastic….. it needs to be so that it doesn’t wear out the carbon. So you back it right off dead loose before you slide it up and down and it will not wear out to the rate that it would if you slide it about under some tension like everyone does.
It also makes sense that you keep it clean and keep it maintained.
I proved today it’s 5 minutes out of your time.
They are the best poles bar none imo.
Mine isn’t a special Version and it’s the only one I’ve got. I’ve had it nearly 9 years.
It’s used 2-3 times every week for every species all year round since the day I bought it.

Never had a single replacement part or modification since the day I bought it. These poles are just not designed to be used without periodic maintenance and proper use.

Hi Richard, I agree on most counts, however, this is a product that is produced in large numbers with in my experience no instructions on "Best Practice" and as such should be more durable. We are not all budding engineers and although I , like you have nursed my original handle and a second through many years of service, at the price I expect the products locking system to be much more robust.
Still the best landing net handle on the market though ;)
 
I had a Drennan twist lock handle with a Korum rubberised spoon net. The net was great but the handle was nothing but hassle. Which is a a shame because I like Drennan as they are great supporters of specialist angling.

I am going back to using my Chris Brown 36 incher.

That’s a dam good product Richard but a ham fisted mate managed to over tighten his and broke off one of the grippers, he over tightened it ‘cos it was slipping (he hadn’t kept it clean and dry). The TB gave me a replacement part and a second as a spare for him but like the Drennan they need handling with a bit of care and also like the Drennan the inside tube needs to be kept clean. That said if I didn’t have three aged Drennans, like you, I would definitely have the Darent Valley for sure. 👍
 
Had 2 drennan twistlocks for over 12 years, never maintained it, washed the odd bit of sand out. Broke 2 widgets by mates over tightening etc. You can also make it longer by putting 2 males into a female...... fnar fanar 😆 🤣
 
I've just bought a new one and 'will not' be overtightening it!! The new one locks when I turn it the other way though but that doesn't really matter so long as it locks!
I discovered the pole had split at the end where the widget was so even after cleaning it out and superglueing it in it came out again.
