Helicopter rigs

two braids that work for the leader

a) Gardner 22lb Hydrosink - 0.35mm dia

b) Korda 20lb Sub braid - 0.36mm dia

i no longer use scissors to cut braid - bought a Berkely braid cutter tool - basically a battery operated 'hot wire' cutter which fuses the cut so no fraying

also for components have a look at Bank Tackle - cheap and quick delivery

i have no association with Bank Tackle

also another great Berkely tool - the battery operated line stripper - great for hassle free stripping old line off spools

i am happy to discuss rods/reels/line etc used if its of interest

before the dreaded covid i was working closely with Steve Harrison to develop a specialist 'roach rod' as nothing was available on the market

i originally used and still use the old Fox Kevlar Specialist range (and yes, they are silly prices on Eby)

i have the two prototypes from the Harrison collaboration and hope to start field testing in the next few weeks

reel wise use what you like but i insist on a front drag and good line lay - i use old Shimano Japanese white Stradic FGs and much more recent Shimano match feeder reels - and certainly no 'quick drag' conversions - they are the devils spawn

as for alarms - only Delkim i'm afraid

DEL did my first Heron conversions - now showing my age
talking of my original conversions

Del converted my old Herons to LEDs etc

first used them on a trip to Snowberry with my friends Kev Maxfield and Tim Paisley

i remember they had a new 'speaker' about which kev with his usual dry whit said 'do they play tunes'

i had the last laugh as broke the Snowberry lake record - on brown bread flake - it was that long ago

and i was suffering from a massive hangover after a night in the Green Man pub (think that was the name?)

Yep it's hook link. Not sure re diameter.
i would not think it suitable for the 'leader' - better to use a flexible sinking braid of the types i listed earlier?

you really need a soft and flexible leader that lies on the lake bed because anything that might 'loop up' is potentially a problem using 4" hooklinks

This is for helicopter rigs

should be fine for longer carp hooklinks? - but not i think for my rig

as my rig is designed for roach, tench and bream i find fluorocarbon best as its stiff in lower breaking strains

as previously said i use off the peg 4" hooklinks from the likes of Korum/Guru/Drennan etc as they can tie them far better than i can

i have tried just about every tool/technique and cannot produce 4" hooklinks - they vary from 3" to 6",lol

Simple homemade hook length tool with red numbers showing inches from small thin nail on the right. Tie hook on line, fix to no head nail at desired length. Loop line or braid around last nail. Take loop off and use it to tie a double overhand loop knot. Works every time including 2 inches! But longer for barbel!
