Which landing net handle?

James Hinley

Senior Member
As the title really, i've been struggling on the river banks with my inadequate landing net handle. I have been recommended both the super specialist twist lock and middy 'Rock Ard'. Are there any other favourites amongst you barbel hunters; opinions would be appreciated!

My opinion

The best one ive seen was a fox one with a spike on the end of it dont no the model but was telescopic

James,
I have a drennan telescopic, carbon harrison and a conoflex from Leslie's but my best handle by far
is a gardner telescopic about £30 really strong, light and a good length for using on such rivers as the severn. All the fittings are metal and not plastic.
Paul.

Get this one if you can live with an 8ft one. It might need a small mod but will last a very long time and is rock solid.
Heres the mod:

To be honest you may think this is a bit of a faff but it really is one of the best handles about.
I have one of these. It's certainly a tough piece of kit, but I find it too heavy to use at full stretch in a fast river. it's also heavy and bulky when roving.

I now use a Drennan Super Specialist, much lighter and more manageable, longer, easier to extend, and I'm delighted with it. I'll save the Powerstretch for occasions when I might have to lift a 15lb barbel over a bankside snag :)

Powerstretch is also great for for beating down vegetarians oopps I mean vegetation!!

Try going out and visiting a few tackle shops and look at a few, (they let you open them up and everything)....When you find one you like give the man some money, (no more than 4 tenners) and take it home......Simplees.

Thanks for the info guys.

Adrian C, I've seen one of these on ebay for £28 (perhaps yourself?). They seem good - unfortunately i wouldnt be in a position to collect from you location (petrol would far surpass landing net cost!). Appreciate the offer though...

Adrian W, i have looked at one or two already, and my local tackle shop are getting a delivery of the drennan SS twistlock this week so will have a play around with it. My question was hoepfully to get info on longevity as well (i've heard one or two concerns with the lock locking for instance??).

It's something i'm willing to invest in - i've had a take apart handle a couple of years ago - which decided to take itself apart upon landing a fish! I then had a carp landing net handle....no more than 6ft in length and wholly inadequate for roving and landing from high banks. My ideal choice - telescopic, strong, lightweight, long lasting, and most importantly wont fail at the critical moment!! Here's hoping.....

Try looking at the match tackle, you will find a selection of strong light three piece 12' telescopic handles at a very reasonable cost.
Match carp are big these days and those lads like to get them netted pretty quick.

I gave my powerstrech away recently as it was too heavy and went back to an old telescopic job which cost me about £8 yonks ago.

I have posted this before. If you want long, light, strong, and cheap then make your own from an 8mt telescopic whip which can be purchased for less than a tener.

Powerstretch all the way ! Best handle ever !
The mods are easy to do and TBH I've never found it that heavy. Like Clive says bulletproof. (I'm around 19 1/2 stones and it didn't break when I stood on it !).
The 8 footer is not ideal, but the best of a bad bunch ! Find a 10 footer and you discovered rocking horse do do !

Regards Paul M.

I have the Fox Stalker too. It's a great handle (and looks nice too!). It could do with being a foot longer but in any normal situation it's done me proud.

Hi Geoff, which Korum one is this (i've googled it and there's a few!)

The one I gave away was a 10' (a Westy special) and it weighed best part of a kilo. I'm not a big guy and found it a monstrous thing to lug around. As well as being heavy it was unwieldy and awkward to collapse when you had a fish in it in a tight swim. I'm happy with the telescopic match one I use now......And it handles double figure fish with ease.
