Where can I get something like this from ???

Hiya Guys,

Some years ago I have a fantastic rod holder that was just a piece of stainless steel tube blanked off on one end with a 3/8 BSF bolt through the end and the tube had the front face cut away as in the diagram below.

It was absolutely fanstastic for holding a rod at 45-60 degrees when barbel fishing and would hold rock solid if mounted in a solid stainless bankstick that was well hammered in well. It could hold the hardest running barbel and I have even used it for beachcasting for carp off the surface at french fishing venues. For love nor money I cannot find one anywhere. The nearest I can find is this poxy thing here.

If any of you guys can help me locate one of these tube rests or can put me onto someone that can make one for me I would be very grateful.

Thx.

You could always try one of these..

It is called a sandspike, used by beach anglers, the butt of the rod is placed in the cup, and the rod is then placed in the cradle at the top, I have a couple , but have never used one when on the river, no reason why it wont work though.

Dave

I saw those sand spikes when I was hunting for the tubes. They are a lot bigger than the small tubes that stick on the end of a bankstick though. I would prefer a piece of stainless pipe if possible blanked off.

Rob, you would find it easier and probably just as cheap to get one made from a stainless fabricater! If you google it I'm sure you will find someone who can make it for you.

Hiya Keith,

Great minds think alike mate. I have just sent the drawing to 10 local companies that fabricate stainless and aluminium products. Hope the costs are not too prohibitive.

Rob,

That is the simplest thing in the world to make, and any small engineering company could make one for you. I certainly could, were I not retired.

However, it wouldn't be cheap. Even if the cut away section was crudely done with a heavy grinder for instance, leaving you to finish and tidy it up, you would probably still be looking at something like £35 labour + materials for the prepared and welded job  Also, you would need to find a company with the tube already in stock, because there is no way they would want to get involved in a minimum order charge for such a small job....and you would not want to pay the cost of that either, trust me on this :D.

The alternative is to obtain the raw materials and shape them yourself, leaving only the welding for the engineering company to do. Even then, in st.st, you would probably be looking at £10/15 labour + materials....which could well be another £10 or more. If you are really lucky, they may have some off-cuts in their scrap bin that they would let you have cheap, perhaps a fiver or so, and provided you prepared the bits, a welder might run it round in his tea break for another fiver....but you would need lots of luck and/or good friends to get it done for that . There is a lot to be said for mass produced items :D

Of course I am talking south of Watford gap prices here...up in'tut frozen north it may be considerably cheaper........

Cheers, Dave.

I made up a couple using 1.25in plastic waste pipe, with the inner part of a bankstick, pot rivetted to the inside. Work really well, cheap as chips, and light.

Are we going to find out what the local companies quoted? Or are they hanging it out :D

Cheers, Dave.

Rob.I was in B&Q yesterday, they had some tubular steel table /bed legs, with one end blanked off and a threaded bolt through the end as you described, simple job to cut the leg at an angle and fit an alternative threaded bolt, either to the leg or to the bankstick.
Failing that try going to Spain for a holiday, they sell what you want in their tackle shops.
