What's this spike for please?

Going through my boxes of odds and ends I found this.
I guess the hole on the side towards the top is for a bar to screw the spike into the ground.
There is a hole at the very end but it's only 10mm in diameter which I think is smaller than an umbrella pole
so any thoughts please

I thought the same. Like a dog spike but far less bulky.

The spike was made by Gardner probably over 20 years ago. I can't recall the name but I had a couple.

The idea behind it was to be able to get a bankstick into hard ground. You screwed it into the ground using a tommy bar then put your bank stick into the top & tightened the screw to stop the bank stick moving.

It looks like you adapted it to use it as you would a dog spike.

It looks to me like my Nash prolly pole , they used to sell them separately because of breakages to hollow Brolly poles, although some Nash brollys came with them in .
I think someone has adapted it to suit their needs . Ie , dog spike or digging stick like Matthew said.

As others have said it looks like a bank stick/hole excavator with an auger point for rock hard ground, with the hole at the top for a T-bar to crank it round and get more force. JAG excavator bank sticks are a similar setup for carp (I have them)
