What's been nibbling this boillie?

Last night on my local River Dane, I lost a Barbel to a hook pull early in the session; the boillie was still on the hair and containing some odd marks? Prior to the Barbel taking the bait, I had lots of taps on the rod end:

Now I know Signal Crayfish are rife on the Upper Dane and its only a matter of time, before they spread throughout the river. Where I was fishing also has a lot of Eels at the moment and in the past I've found V shaped bite marks on large meat baits.

Short of me trying a Crayfish trap to confirm presence, what are peoples opinions on the photo i.e. Eels mouthing the bait, Signal Crayfish attention or other?

All the hallmarks of signals Neil,...if you had given it a bit more time it would have come back looking like an apple core.
Brings back memories of the river Mole,...bloody nightmare,...have noticed signal activity on Dorset Stour this season,...but not in the same league as the Mole.
