Whats a good gravel coloured braid

Andrew Firth

I normally use Kryston Super nova almost religiously....

However I'd like to try something new, the rivers I fish is almost browny type gravel, so what do you recommend....?

P.S. - I prefer softer braids not covered/skin type

Andy

Kryston silkworm in 12lb brown
Korda supernatural gravel brown

You could do the opposite of what common sense tells you and use a very obvious dark braid; you'd be surprised (or maybe not) at how many fish get caught on what theyre not supposed to. ;)

cheers

Have heard a few people say that the korda supernatural braid though meant to be sinking in fact does'nt sink to good:mad: What about the drennan sink braid, its brown cheap and sinks..

Kyston Super Mantis brown coated for snaggy rivers / swims, if it was good enough to catch the Traveller.......

as you don't like coated go with the other suggestions above!

dare i say Dacron......

Quite like Drennan Dacron, and it seems completely tangle free when casting, only down side for me is that its abrasion resistance properties are non existent. Obviously you don't go for a non coated braid in a snag swim, but this stuff with fray on the slightest twig or other minor object. IMHO much weaker than other non-coated braids in this respect.

korda do a dull soft to touch coated braid which blends in nicely with the bottom, a muddy brown or a gravelly colour or a weed green colour, i know you said you prefer uncoated soft braid but have a look at this stuff it really
is good and soft and has good knot strength too....j.w

John - do you mean the Hybrid Soft? If so it has been discontinued as far as i'm aware. The uncoated Supernatural remains, and i have to say i'm another fan of this material. I use mono's for 95% of my barbel fishing but when i need something stronger than 10lb breaking strains i prefer a soft braided hooklink as i find mono's become too stiff at higher diameters. Supernatural is delightfully limp but not very abrasion resistant so i use a short 3" section at the business end, the rest of the hooklink being made of Nash Armourcord in 15lb b/s which is the toughest material i think i've ever used. Having used this combination in snag situations for a couple of seasons i can say hand on heart i've not lost a single fish due to hooklink failure and there aren't many anglers who fish the very rocky Ribble who can say that! I have friends in the carp scene that use the Nash stuff straight through, it's not as supple as most but certainly softer than the equivelent b/s mono and as mentioned it's incredibly tough! Only available in one colour though - which is a very dark green, almost black - the barbel don't seem to mind though! ;)

yes andrew, i visit a tackleshop once a year and bust the bank:D so was not aware they stopped selling it, drennan sink braid i used a lot and it seldom let me down but rocky bottoms! amnesia mono is tough as boots...j.w

Just a question for those using Drennan Braid.

How do you stop it from tangling on the cast? To me it's almost as limp as string!

Sam

Thanks Darryl, I like the look of that gel. Do you think that a few spots of Tungsten putty along the length would have an impact? i.e. it would serve to pin the line down and also reduce tangles.

Sam

Sam,

Just rub the braid through the putty and it will sink better or rub it through some river silt, small pva bag or boilie stringer will sort out the tangles....
