What suntan cream

Adrian Williams

I don't use a suntan cream when I'm fishing because all of them leave a greasy residue and have a scent which I worry about transferring to the bait.
However; I got burned this weekend and got a second roasting off the wife so I'm now looking for recommendations for a good sunscreen.
Any suggestions?

It is a problem I have never found an answer to Adrian, so I hope someone comes up with something good.

The only answer I have ever come up with is to put the stuff on, then wash your hands thoroughly with soap (which is also a bait killer), and then spend five minutes washing my hands in clay/loam/sand gleaned from just under the water line, then rinsing that off in the river.

Two problems with my solution...rinsing in the river sends your scent down to the fish, who are amazingly sensitive to such things, and secondly, you run the risc of picking up Weils disease. Other than that...and providing you don't muck the whole thing up by absent mindedly scratching/rubbing your face as soon as you sit back down...it works a treat

I guess we need a garlic spam flavour suntan lotion :D:D:D

Cheers, Dave.

Nivea moisturising sun spray in factor 30, spray finely on arms and backs of hands (and wherever else you need it) before leaving the house or get the good lady to rub it in for you. If you are worried about a little bit of scent putting fish off, spit into your palms or rub them in your oily pellets or boilie dip.

P20 is very good. Put on before you go and then thats it.

It doesn't leave a residue and feels like it evapourates.

I have LUPUS so the sun does me no favours - P20 allows me to fish and holiday in the sun so I can't complain. It seems expensive to buy but it does go a long way. One bottle should last all summer.

Another vote for Riemann P20. I tried it after a similar thread a few weeks ago and it does the business. As Crooky says, you can put it on at home and wash your hands properly, but it isn't oily anywayl, it gets absorbed by the skin and it's resistant to sweat. Good stuff :):)

I read somewhere that WD40 was a good glug. With that in mind, do you still think a smear of suntan cream is such a big deal??!!

Would recommend Garnier/Ambre Solaire - Clear Protect SPF 20 - non greasy. Wear a long sleeved shirt and a floppy hat! - I've survived the hottest of days and not been roasted either by the sun or my Missus!

I am conscious of the potential for tainting the bait but I would go along with Paul's suggestion - it works for me.

Cheers

Ade....you are naughty.Whether to believe your question or not?? ......better have a quick look on the darkside.:D

I read somewhere that politicians were honest, well meaning people with our interests at heart

If you want to believe everything you read, then go ahead and smear sun cream on your bait and dip them in WD40. Me? I will just carry on being scrupulous about not tainting my bait, and carry on catching barbel :D

It may well be that such things do not make any real difference...but the confidence they give you for so little effort is absolutely priceless:)

Cheers, Dave.

I caught a fair few on the Wye last 4 days and was appling cream 3 to 4 times through the day while fishing...never affected my catch rate, 45ish fish in 4 days.

Hmm, waiting with bated breath as to whether this post gets the chop??!!:eek:

Fair enough, but you obviously had a HUGE shoal of barbel in front of you. In those circumstances, the competitive feeding syndrome takes over, and you could then catch them on a ball of badger poo if you put enough of it in.

However, in more sparsely populated rivers, where the fish have plenty of time to examine your bait without fear that it will be eaten instantly if they don't scoff it down quickly...things are a tad different. In THOSE circumstances it would be stupid in the extreme to not take simple, effortless measures to at least try to present the fish with the most inviting bait possible.

Like I say...do what works for you...whatever gives YOU confidence.

Might I also add that If you require 3 or 4 applications of sun cream during a days fishing, you either change your sun cream...or your hobby :D:D:D

I fished a different spot each day and no I did not have a HUGE shoal infront of me...

And you should re-apply suntan cream regularly through hot weather, especially when your wading in to land fish as I was.

I imagine the flow soon washes a bait anyway if you did manage to get a bit of scent off your fingers onto the bait when rigging it...

Rich,

I have a medical condition for which I have to take some fairly powerful drugs. The side effect of one of those drugs is hypersensitivity to sunlight meaning I burn easily, the suggestions made in this thread may or may not be useful, (the p20 looks promising).

Robin.
Back in the dark ages WD40 was alleged to contain a large proportion of whale oil along with solvents and propellants, sea anglers would use the lubricant as a water displacer on their reels and lures and the myth of it being an attractant was born, obviously the formula has changed but the myth remains.

PS, Rich, If you want answers for your cosmetic problems can I suggest you ask on here http://www.mumsnet.com/
