water temp question ?

Notwithstanding or maybe because of recent low water levels ,today /sundays heavy rain in surrey tempts me towards last knockings trips to the wey and royalty.

I do not live close enough to either to test the water tempratures .my question is , aside of obvious conditions such as heavy hail sleet , is there a general rule of thumb correlation between air and water temprature - and barbel feeding conditions ? in other words is there a min air temp for barbel to feed ?

Not that I know of since lots of factors come into play such as rainwater entering the river upstream, which could be a different temp, etc. Generally I'd say air temps need to be double figures through the day and not dropping below about 6-8 degrees at night in order to be confident the water would be in good nick. Stands to reason that day/nights below this will cool the water below the temps advised for Barbel.

Paul for the Royalty conditions google Knapp Mill. It's a monitoring station on the Avon;)(would put link but don't know how:()

Looks like that air temp was not the only thing that dropped yesterday! Must have been cold rain (well it did turn sleety and then snow before it fizzled out and we then had a couple of hail showers just for good measure!)

Hopefully, with no (further) frosts (there was a slight ground frost last night and we may get another tonight), and air temps holding steady in the low 50s during the day, we might actually be getting somewhere. I see there's even a little more rain forecast for Wednesday but coming from the SW/W this time. so hopefully it will be the warm variety!
