Warm fishing jackets & trousers

Julian Griffiths

I know the secret of keeping warm whilst on the banks, is all about layering up...

I'm after a decent quality jacket & trousers to keep me warm, dry breathable etc & just wondering what you guys are using.

I walk a lot too, so wanting something that crosses both divides ideally.
I'd happily consider gortex quality too.

Cheers

If I was starting out again, I'd think of having warm clothes and a waterproof layer, rather than a waterproof/warm coat. A bit like the hillwalking folk do. I find my Trakker coat too bulky to do anything other than sit in it. Can't imagine walking any distance in it, I'd be soaked from sweat.

Layer up with a base layer and some sort of fleece/mid layer, then put on a lightweight waterproof shell if it rains.

Thats pretty much what i've done for many years.
I have posted links to these jackets on bfw before as i'm very impressed with them because of their practicality, they work very well and also the price of them is competitive.
They "greys lightweight wading jackets" are for sale on ebay and glasgow angling being the cheapest I found at 60 quid plus a few quid post.
I think they are a few quid cheaper if you go direct to glasgow angling shop online.
I have bought from Glasgow angling for years now and they have always been a reliable seller.

Snugpak sj9 are excellent ….but also these are worth every penny in keeping your lower back area warm - same as the snugpak they have the longer back. A real winner imo

Ditto (and bird watching), which is why I do as some have already suggested and layer up as the activity, temperature and precipitation dictate. Layering means you can use your gear all year around and smaller individual items are more easily packable.

Never fished through winter before, and a lot of my outdoor gear is Arcteryx (and there's no way I'm fishing in that), so I've been shopping...

Bought some Korda Polar Kombat trousers, that I wear over cheap Peter Storm thermal leggings (these are not too tight, so they work really well - I find tight base layers just don't trap air well enough). I already have some Mountain Equipment Zeno full-zip pants, for when it rains. The Zeno pants are a nice fit too - not big baggy things like lots of over-trousers (v. expensive though).

I also bought a Korda Insulated Hooded Jacket, with as many layers as necessary underneath, mostly Rab or Mountain Equipment, and when it rains, an Aqua F12 Torrent jacket.

Very happy with Aqua and Korda stuff - nicely made, nice fit, very comfortable and very packable, but my best buy this autumn has been a long-sleeved base layer from Military 1st - Helikon Top US Level 1 (whatever US level 1 means). Liked this top so much I bought three.

I use the trakker core 3 winter suit, for the money I can’t fault it

Not sure that (or any other bib and brace) crosses the divide between walking and fishing. 😆

Here's a link to the jackets on ebay incase anyone fancies a nosey....

Heres a youtube vid about them...

Not so fussed about sallopets unless fishing really static (in which case my Aldi Crane do the job) - prefer fleece lined softshell plus some light waterproof over trousers (Korda Drykore) if its wet / muddy.

Jacket wise for winter you cannot beat Rab Valiance (in Army Green colourway) . . .hydrophobic down puffa jacket with a large hood; its not only warm it has decent waterproofing (Pertex Shield) negating the need for a waterproof shell over the top . . .

That would do my head in, be like wearing a crisp packet 🤭

A family size pack 🤣.
I looked for a jacket like those for yonks, could never get one I liked until these came along. They weigh very little, they fold up smaller than his when he just srewed it up. They do have a little russtle but not so much as to bother me in normal use.
The aqu torrent looks ok, but i've never tried one and I have no idea how crunchy they sound 🤣😂.

For me, its 1 or 2 t-shirts, then a micro fleece on top, a padded snugpak jacket, then a lightweight waterproof Nash Scope jacket on top. Ive stood in the middle of the River Mersey, ( obviously when the tide was out ) in sub zero temps, and was toastie as a bag of chips.
