Torrix or hi s rods

I'm looking to get either the torrix 12ft 1.75lb,2lb or the hi s 12ft 1.75lb, 2lb t.c for my barbel fishing . Would also be using them for my tench fishing aswell. Which would be the better rod for type of fishing Im looking to use them for.

Afternoon,

I am good friends with rod builders and have owned a lot of blanks in my time. For me it’s torrix all day long no questions but the rods suit me

I have

1.5lb 11ft crucians and small ish tench and happy with perch on them.
2lb 11ft bigger tench bigger waters and my barbel rod
2.5ft 2.5 flood and small carp waters
And 12.6 te big waters France rod but just as happy under the tip

I have sold every other rod I have and they cover 100 percent of my fishing other than my float rods etc.

You will get lots of opinions on the matter as it’s personal preference

But there a fast rod but forgiving at goes through power stages.

I just am not a fan of free sprit nothing wrong with them but personally I like the British made and engineered rods.

Hope it helps.

I have the Torrix 1.75 and 2.00 and they do everything I need, built by Bob Gill and 15 years old. If there was something I deemed better I would buy it but for me there isn't. Can't compare with the Hi S as I haven't seen them.

Bob G. built me a torrix 12’ 1.75/2.0 lb tc twin tip some years ago,… it’s still my go-to barbel rod after a good decade of use. Can’t compare with other compatible blanks in that range as I’ve always been happy with what I’ve got.

There are plenty more knowledgeable than me but I have 3 x 12 foot 1 3/4 Torrixs for my Barbel and tenching and they do everything I need unless it’s tenching and I need to cast more than 50 or 60 yards in which case you’d need something a bit more specialized IMO

If you choose Free Spirit I would go with the Barbel Seeker rather than the Hi's . I had a pair of the Hi's Specialist in 12ft 1.75tc Stepped up and found them not suitable (for me) for barbel fishing.. They just seem to bend from tip to joint and I even struggled to pull a barbel over the landing net. A beautiful rod but not for mr for barbel. Now the barbel seeker is an absolute joy to use. I had mine custom made but the only alteration I had was to make the handle a few inches shorter than the off the shelve ones... I have used a Torrix but I prefer the Free Spirit Barbel seeker but like others say' It's only my opinion

I would also chose a 12’ seeker over a 12’ torrix
Unlike most on here, I’m not a lover of the 12’ Torrix specialist rod. The 11 however is a different animal altogether and I’m a huge fan of that. I wouldn’t want to use anything else over the 11ft torrix in either test curve…. It’s fantastic.

If you want a 12’ Harrison to go against the free spirits then chimera no2 is your boy.
It eats the tippy torrix 12footers and floppy hi s rods for breakfast 😉

I’m in the same camp as Richard I.

I bought a used 11ft 1.75 Torrix this year and love it. I’m not as keen on the 12ft version - I have played with one several times and don’t like the action.

Chimera 2’s are great too and double as excellent tench rods; unless you need to fish at really long range.

It's each the there own I agree with Richard the 11ft torrix are awsome .iv used the 12 free spirit hi s 2lb for the last 4 year and for a all-rounder ie tench and barbel there av my vote..av to stay the 11 ft torrix is a special rod as well

I cannot comment on the hi s but to me the torrix is just a run of the mill rod. Unless you are needing to cast a fair weight it's resistance to bending is much too much.

For me, the Torrix 1.75, is lacking a little power in the butt for me. Its akin, to using a spring, when u have a fish on.. I'm sure you can get a torrix, with a 2.25 butt section and a 1.75 top. I have seen one in the flesh and it makes it a far far better rod imo.. Eden rods did them..not sure if he's still building them tbh.

So, reading through all this, the perfect rod would be, ( to me anyway ), 11ft, 2lb tc butt section, with a 1.75 tc top, is such a thing available, :)

My 2lb 11ft Torrix feel just like that , not tried the H-S but the Torrixs do everything I want on small to medium sized rivers

Well mine does Anthony,… great rod. Bob would probably elaborate.
Perhaps somewhere deep in the bfw archives there’s still the catalogue of Bobs rods?
Yes, 12' Torrix 2lb and 1.75 butts are common and designed like that.
Although there are tips that physically fit various other butt sections, they are not intended to be paired.
Cheers
Bob

PS - Best wishes and regards Dave.

I’ve had hi s and seekers .. seekers far better imo that’s why I still have them but……. None of them are as good as a daiwa basia best rods I have owned by a country mile..…never owned a torrix so can’t comment
