The impossible rod!

Hi - another one of those questions, after bit of advice, I am looking for a 12ft rod that would double up for a bit of Tench fishing at a local club water (heavy line on a float!) and also do for smaller barbel and chub - float or light ledger. I have a 11ft Free Spirit 1.5lb and am considering the 12ft of this - unless anyone has any better suggestions, willing to go to about £200.00. Thanks in advance.

Harrison Chimera 1 or the Harrison Interceptor 1 would fit the bill Garry, of the two I'd plump for the former.

Interceptor 1 is a great rod at 1lb 10 oz. Have a look at the 12' Torrix 1.25 as well. Just happens that I have a new Interceptor 1 12' made up that is for sale.

Hi Garry,
Harrison Interceptor 1, 12' 1 lb 10 oz test.
Gloss clear finish (unground blank)
Fuji BSVOG rings sizes 20 to 8 (11 in all)
Full cork handle, with cork 'burl' accents.
Winch fitting and Dark wine whipping thread with metallic tippings (3 x single)
NEW with cloth bag.

All the best,

I have a pair of original Drennan Super specialists 12' 1.5lb tc in near perfect condition you could have for £150, i have a third one which i use for floater fishing for carp...have had them to mid doubles, the rods cope quite admirably.
Pictures available on request.....if i can get them off my bloody phone...

The drennans are very nice, light versatile rods at a good price. I've had a couple for years and other anglers I bump into who use them can't fault them

Worth have having a look at the Drennan 7 Series Avon's the 1 1/2 is a great rod for float fishing and ledgering, and the quiver tip section is useful if you want to fish maggot feeder etc with lighter lines and smaller hooks.

Chimera specialist 2. 1.75lb TC

I've used mine for Tench and they're great. I've also ran a stick down with them, just to try it  probably pushing it a bit but ok in shallowish water on smallish rivers, fine for waggler work though.

BUT my go to rod for smallish water barbel with a roving approach and float fishing for tench is my much loved Daiwa powermesh avon 11' 9" in 1.25lb, rocking horse poo though!!

Every time I see a Powermesh Avon mentioned I go to the garage to check my Daiwa Avon and it still hasn't morphed into the rare Powermesh, just it's cheaper sidekick
It has all the looks of the Powermesh, same t.c length handle etc, so I am wondering is it justified all the hype over the Powermesh, or are they that much better to justify the asking price of £170 in some cases? :)

Stop it Bob just stop it. That Interceptor is just amazing.

I've never come across your Avon Neil, but I'm amazed at the versatility of the powermesh. I've had carp to high doubles off the surface, barbel over 8lb in a flooded Tees and the usual tench etc.

I swear it stops bigger fish quicker than rods with a higher TC, it soaks up powerful runs like a bungee and I guess in the process, knackers them out.

Just checked again Bob, it actually is a Powermesh, and the model is PMXS 119AV. Also labeled as a multi strand graphite. Bought it a few years back as new, never used it, but I can confirm it bends to the corks. The thing I didn't like about the rod is the end tip screw fitting that as you will know any tip worth it's salt is a push in.. .I know Drennan did do a screw tip, and I have a couple but they are useless. However if you say it is a robust rod in it's own right, perhaps it a perfectly adequate small river barbel rod? :)

Small rivers, Barbel..what am I thinking?:(

Edit, the rod I believe you have is the PMS111, this I think is the sought after one, but not 100% sure.

Split cane avon rods perform in a similar fashion , they bend dramatically but soon tire out some suprisingly large fish , not very good at slinging out heavy leads long distances though ...

Don't know if they still do them but there is a 12ft, 1.25lb test Torrix called the Chris Holley Rover ( I think there were a range of them ). An attractive rod which should meet your needs if you can find one but expect to pay top dollar as it's a limited edition , I know I had to for mine !
PM me your mail address if you're interested in seeing some pics ?

If you ever want to sell it, give me a shout!

They also came with a full length quiver tip section, I think!! I'm pretty sure I had the option in the shop of buying both top sections, but I've never seen the need for quiver tips for bigger fish, which I bought the rod primarily for after reading a review in a mag.

Thanks for that Bob, actually I am a bit surprised at that model being the sought after one. Daiwa do their level best to confuse with their model numbers. I will keep you in mind as far as selling, I do need to cut back some gear, it is in great condition with no marks, and original Daiwa bag.
