The illusive Eton Fisheries?

Stephen Bond

Senior Member
Have decided to revisit my Thames roots this season in search of barbel and such I have been trawling the interwebs and catching up on twenty years of news.

One item of news was that Old Windsor AC has lost it rights at Romney and been gazumped by a new group called "Eton Fisheries".

http://www.maidenhead-advertiser.co.uk/m/news/article-20310-eton-college-hands-over-fishing-rights-to-new-group/

http://www.anglersmail.co.uk/tag/eton-fishing-battle/

Keen to check out what is on offer and for how much I searched for Eton Fisheries website, by alas in vain. I concluded the group was so new and thus was still putting one together.

Fast forward to this week and I was interested to see they have a multipage feature in the the Anglers Mail. Feeling sure they would mention their URL I scanned the article but alas, still could not see one. It did however mention an email address, etonfisheries@gmail.com. So I emailed them five days ago enquiring about their fishery but until yet, no reply!

So what is going on? Surely having paid for the rights one would think they would be keen to get some 'bumbs on seats' and recoup their investment? Also, being the Google age, one would think they would have a snappy website in place pretty quickly as a shopwindow? Or maybe I am just missing the issue here? Any ideas?

You'd of thought Stephen.

It's local to me and I'd consider it but at £100 and without closer / secure parking it's a no for me and many of my friends. There might well be free parking at the bottom of Home Park but as it's quiet and lonely cars regularly get done - I should know as I work with local Police.

I know someone ' in the know ' and apparently up take for the Eton Fisheries ticket has been very slow. Many of the swims on Romney are now overgrown and some unfishable without some serious pruning. To my knowledge no working parties took place in the spring. Shame, as for 40 odd years Old Windsor Angling Club did a sterling job keeping the island tidy and swims maintained. As a result of the loss of their home water OWAC have successfully negotiated the fishing rights from the Royal Borough of Windsor Maidenhead for Home Park. Bit of an arse as it was a free stretch.

Romney Weir is currently being rebuilt / strengthened so it can take turbines which will supply green hydro power to the castle, but that's a whole new debate - don't get me started on that but the work is so significant that it simply must of effected the fishing, or will do when the turbines go live. It's also been muted that this work is another reason why the ticket has failed to appeal to people for this season.

Here's a link to the Aquatec site which will give you a little more info : http://www.aquatecfisheries.co.uk/aquatecfisheries/Home.html

Hope that helps.

Duncan.

Thanks for your input one and all.

Duncan, cheers for the link. There seems to be a little more info there since my last visit. Still no link to Eton Fisheries though because it still doesn't exist!

"Eton Fisheries
Aquatec Fisheries has a direct link to Eton Fisheries. Kevin Rolls has entered a partnership to invest time into bringing the stretch of the river Thames up to Aquatec Fisheries standard. For more information, please click on the Eton Fisheries link above."

No mention of the £6 day ticket as promised or even a map of where I might be able to fish for my £100? Is there an surprise that the member uptake is slow? Really, their PR department and webmaster and comms needs sorting out quickly. I wish them all the best but without knowing what is on offer it is a mystery.

What's the betting Eton Fisheries loose interest in a year or two and OWAC take it back up?

"As a result of the loss of their home water OWAC have successfully negotiated the fishing rights from the Royal Borough of Windsor Maidenhead for Home Park. Bit of an arse as it was a free stretch."

Indeed. I am a big fan of free fishing, especially when other are charging £100 fora stretch a short way upstream ;)

Mind you, its not unlike the council to take something that was free for years and then start charging for it-just take parking as an example.

Stephen

The Thames, the People's River, written about and immortalized by Patrick R. "Tail of The Weir" Chalmers, a big shot in the Bank of England and pure British Establishment yet who still warned (in 1932) about the consequences of salmon returning to the river (money making a landgrab of the best fishing, and the fishers who make the Thames what it is being excluded and priced-out), a river fished by everyman for a bit of everything, from the little guys to giants like A.E. Hobbs...

And what do we get now?

Money-hungry minnows.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your enquiry regarding Eton Fisheries. I am pleased to enclose documentation outlining our membership details and fees.
If you are interested in joining, please email us to check availability and once a space is confirmed, please complete the attached form and return with the required information and remittance.
Since we took over the fishing in 2010, there have been various unexpected developments on the river which we feel you ought to be aware of. The Environment Agency are trying to claim the fishing rights between the metal bridge by Clewer Meadow upstream to Ruddles Pool on the corner of the river. These rights have been let by the College for many years and the river bed is owned by one of Patrick Todd’s clients since the 16th Century! It is hoped this can be resolved quickly and without fuss. The EA are also carrying our repair works to Romney Weir which will involve piling and some barge traffic between July and end of Sept. We have only recently learnt about this, and there is little we can do. Also a turbine is proposed for Romney Weir, but these repairs are needed before this can happen and any installation is likely to be in 2012. We are informed that there will be no turbine at Boveney Weir. You will have no doubt seen the various reports in the press. Finally, we are in discussion with Eton regarding the provision of additional car parking and they have agreed to help. We will advise when we have more information.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can be of any further assistance regarding membership details, alternatively please contact Kevin Rolls for any specific water enquiries.
I look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to Eton Fisheries. Yours faithfully
Kirsti Murray

ETON FISHERIES MEMBERSHIP DETAILS
President: Marco Pierre White
The is one of the Thames Valley’s best kept secrets, as it has not been let on the open market for many years, having been fished by various clubs under the cloak of Eton College. The waters are now under the management of Eton Fisheries and membership is available.
With over three miles of River Thames rights, Eton Fisheries is conveniently accessed from the M4 at Junction 6 (Slough, Eton, Windsor) or Junction 7 (Slough, Burnham, Taplow). The waters comprise four separate beats including Romney Island, of single bank rights of the River Thames, amounting to over three miles. They are in the attractive setting of the Thames Valley and within sight of Windsor Castle. A comprehensive bailiffing system will be operated which supervises, protects and maintains the fishery, its environment and wildlife.
Catches are reported including barbel over 12lb, bream over 9lb, chub over 7lb, carp over 30lb and perch over 4lb.
There are various public and private parking areas and access points for the waters, and new members are thoroughly vetted. There is a dedicated disabled platform swim at Romney Island and it is hoped to provide more over time, subject to demand.
There are two weirs, one at Romney Island, the other at Boveney Lock, providing an attractive habitat for fish.

***Railway Bridge upstream***
is that the free home park bit.

I thought the free bit was the railway bridge downstream to Victoria bridge?

I assumed this was the bit Duncan was talking about?

As a result of the loss of their home water OWAC have successfully negotiated the fishing rights from the Royal Borough of Windsor Maidenhead for Home Park. Bit of an arse as it was a free stretch.

Good luck to those who buy a ticket, it will cost significantly more to park, and the insurance excess will hurt when your motor gets nicked or trashed, which is a real probability, especially overnight, lovely place, shame about the scum who frequent it!!!

Just found this interesting piece of info posted on another forum

http://oldwindsorac.webs.com/news.htm

"31st July 2011
We no longer have access to the Clewer Meadow, Eton Wick or Boveney fisheries. We had access as members of the TVAA which, at the start of the season, was prepared and willing to continue with the lease for them.
Reluctantly they have had to give up these fisheries as there is an on-going dispute over who actually owns the fishing rights for a substantial amount of this river bank.
The person they were being leased from has not been able to satisfactorily substantiate their claim and it may actually be free fishing under the control of the Environment Agency.
This person has also failed to undertake any maintenance work on the remainder of the fishery which was found to be unacceptable."
