may i please give my warmest thanks to all those that have replied to my posts & sent PMs regarding my upcoming visit down there (please though keep'em' coming). you watch me now...................'balls the whole thing up....lol, :)

hi neil...be prepared to move swims on the stour..my advise would be spot the fish first because there aint loads of barbel in the stour and as already mentioned its very weedy and very low at the moment..as for the avon you would probably be better off on the royalty but make sure you get outside tackle shop before opening time to give yourself a good chance of a good peg as it does get very busy and to be honest you wont get much chance for moving about due to number of other anglers on there..lifelands is a good day ticket venue up by ringwood...good luck..;)

Neil,

I have only fished the Royalty once recently, but it doesn't change a lot, and here are a few pointers which were forcibly refreshed in my mind last weekend :D

If you are fishing the Royalty, you need to be outside Davis's tackle shop well before the opening time of 7.30am at this time of year, especially if you have a particular swim in mind and want a decent crack of getting it (i.e, be at the front of the queue, if there is one...and there usually is)

The aim then is to get into the shop first and buy your ticket, then dash out and park the car in the car park at the end of the lane down the side of the shop, unload in record time and leg it for your chosen swim.

There does seem to be a slight problem going on, because you may still find the odd angler already present when you get onto the water, but there may be a legitimate reason for that (ask at Davis's beforehand, or someone else on here may know the answer to that)

Look on Davis's site for a map and up to date river reports, going swims etc....study the map and make sure you can identify the swim you want, so that you won't waste time faffing about on the day, and thus watch someone else get there in front of you

Cheers, Dave.

sounds like the colne on first night dave....;)

Naaa, it's worse than that mate. When we got down there (the Royalty) the pipe swim had a line of gear strewn along the bank, laying claim to it. An angler sauntered up 10 or 15 minutes later, put on some chest waders, clambered into the river and commenced to fish.

Of course there is access to the fishery via a public foot path, and also there is a second car park with access up by the top compound...and there MAY be concessions to season ticket holders...I am sure someone on here can clear that one up?

Either way, for the uninitiated to get the popular swims, even though they have taken the trouble to do the research, and put in the effort, is not as easy as one might hope.....

Cheers, Dave.

david, thankyou, i seems i've got a mission on my my hands , now i,m thinking cobblers to it all & may be i should cancel the digs (grovenor lodge) & go elsewhere, i do understand its a weell sought after place to fish, but i want a quiet life not a rat race.
i can go to the bull ring in birmingham for that.

im affraid dave is right..you need to be outside shop at least half hour before opening...and hes also right regarding access from top car park but they do have to have relavent day permit even if they are members of rdaa..

There is no concession to season tickets on the royalty, if you get to a swim and you were first in the queue it is highly unlikely that anybody on the river before you has their permit, if thats the case and you get to a swim to find tackle there call the bailiff, you cannot take gear onto the bank without the relevant day ticket and that includes ringwood members, there has been a couple of incidents but the bailiff quickly sorted out the offenders and their tackle was removed from the swims. In my opinion the rules should be like they were years, break them and get a life ban! stops all the nonsense!

no i'm only joking, thanks craig i will try my upmost to get there early. its a bit like that here on the meese (shropshire) when all the roach decide to vacate the mere down to a certain area & if your not on the 5 pegs below the bridge at 4am you don't get to fish, mindyou though you could do massive 70/80lb+ bags of roach.

barry
thankyou i will bear that in mind.
