Thames Valley

Apparently dredging is the answer! Perhaps not for the Thames but a worrying amount of people think this is the only solution. This on a day when construction companies and government argue about who is going to meet the cost of soak-aways on new-build housing estates. I await the compromise solution of dredging and river straightening……

Dredging is not the answer. What stops the water flowing downstream is usually the bridges and locks and other narrow points. I don't see the EA rebuilding all the locks and bridges on the Thames! What is really needed are fields that can be allowed to flood when the water gets high and then gradually release the water back into the river - let us call them flood plains. If we have those the council can grant permission for them to be built on and then the owners can complain their houses get flooded as well as causing problems elsewhere :)

Doesn’t no one realised that as we use more concrete and tarmac, build decking over the garden, even paving slabs over the front garden to accommodate the car. The water doesn’t have anywhere to go except onto roads then into drains which then runs off into the nearby streams then the river. As we build more houses roads etc., expect more flooding. The answer Don’t build on flood plains
Back in the 40’s 50’s 60’s we had lots of rain most years, February was known as fill dyke due to the amount of rain we expected. Since those days when the flooded fields were not causing a problem, we now have housing estates caravans parks etc. and major flooding. The EA can only advise council’s that building houses etc. shouldn’t take place in certain areas, but the council usually ignore the advice in favour of builders’

With immigration remaining uncontrolled, and our borders like sieves (despite all Cameron's crowd pleasing rhetoric) it can only get worse. Councils are already planning to build on green belt land....I wouldn't be at all surprised if much of that will be whatever flood plains are left.

It took me the best part of a lifetime to realise that our governing bodies are self serving liars, out only to feather their own nests. They don't give a damn about the mayhem and wrecked lives their 'policy to fit today' causes....because that is a problem for the next lot to clean up. Here today, rich tomorrow...and the hell with those who voted them in.

Strong, provocative, incendiary stuff? Yes, absolutely. Sadly, it also happens to be true.

Cheers, Dave.

Where I came from the rivers over the last 30 to 40 years have started flooding constantly but a lot of the land is reclaimed from flood plains, the biggest majority of our lands were drained by Cornelius Wasterdyk Vermuyden, when he did the work one of his recomendations for maintaining the works and to stop future flooding was to keep the rivers dredged and put the spoil on the land. This in his recomendation would always stop flooding and the spoil would add great fertiliser to the land. Most of our dredging stopped in the 50's Where I was brought up as a small child in the local docks there were 3/4 dredgers laid up now there are none.

Even the little Rivers used to be maintained, now next to nothing!, I went to the Mease to have a scout and its got in places hardly any depth. I got chatting to an old guy who said they used to clear this and it was deep in places but he hadnt seen anything done for years, he was in his eightys and remembered this from his childhood.

Man blames flooding on immigration........................priceless..............

Dave,

IMO a site dedicated to Barbel fishing is not the correct place to post stuff like this at all.

Dave, very nicely put mate especially the last post you made because it must have flown over steve.s head judging by his post, yes Dave i agree heres not the place for going deeper into your earlier post,

You should read the full version of the article in monday's guardian: Drowning in Money | George Monbiot

This is a really good article and insight into the cause and effect of misguided policy. Thanks Darryl / Dave for posting the link which I repeat again: Drowning in money: the untold story of the crazy public spending that makes flooding inevitable | George Monbiot | Comment is free | The Guardian

My fav comment..lol
I had no idea that Cameron's determination to rid the nation of "green ****" had such a literal meaning.

turns out it means trees on hillsides - that sort of thing.

anyway glad to hear we can subsidise grouse shooting estates to the tune of £37 million.

I take it 'Love Film's will be around to make a new documentary called 'Wealthy Scrounger's Lane'.

I see nothing wrong with Dave's post at all. He's passing an opinion on what may be a contributory factor to flooding and with it putting in a pretty accurate description of todays MPs and their true agendas.
