Spigots

Hi All, I've got a 4.2m (13'08") Shimmy float rod in my garage that I've only ever used twice, basically because it's a '3-piece' and (as most) I much prefer to have my rods already 'made up'. So I'm looking to convert it to a '2-piece'. Anyone got any idea where I can buy spigots from? I've not cut it yet but from a guesstimate from O/D I'm going to need something ~9mm. Any ideas??

I've never seen bits of carbon, specifically intended as spigots, offered for sale anywhere. I'd also be very wary of doing what you intend. Having a couple of two piece 13' float rods, I know that transporting, carrying, and getting luggage for, 13'+ rods, especially more delicate float rods, can be a complete PITA. You might end up with a four piece rod in reasonably short order. All that's before you even consider the effect on the rod's action that cutting it in half and adding a spigot joint might have.

I've got several 3 piece rods I keep made up....it's not that much bother to take them down or put them up.
Hook onto last eye of top section, take off top, fold over, take off bottom, fold over, bit of gardeners soft tie top and bottom to keep bits together.

What Ben said but get a pair of NGT tip protectors, cheap as chips and keeps everything nice and tidy :)
Nice idea Trevor! What I usually do with 2-piece rods is put 'Scrunchy' hair bands each side of the joint, plus an elastic band next to the butt end. When packing up my made-up rods into a Korum quiver my hook is fastened to the hair band on the female (top) section, the rod tip is then slipped under the butt elastic, and the two pieces of rod each side of the spigot are held together by the band just below (male) spigot. Advantages are that it keeps the two sections close together, and similar rods/set-ups can be colour coded by colour of the Scrunchy bands. Latter is useful in avoiding taking wrong set-up when you use 'duo' or 'tri' tip rods.

very simply - do NOT try it as it will end in disaster and a perfectly good rod will be ruined

i have been around rods/blanks all my life and i would not try to undertake what you suggest

Drennan do a sleeve for 3 piece rods up to 15ft which might be a good option for carrying the rod made up?

very good choice

i love the Drennan Specialist luggage range

i currently use two of their two rod Specialist holdalls - quality compares to Cotswold Aquarius of which i own quite a lot!

I always use my 3 piece float rods made up and use the NGT protectors as suggested and have no problems. If you cut and spigot a 3 piece rod you risk spoiling it.
