So who is enjoying the closed season?

To be honest i am, for one i am not endlessly chasing the weather like last winter. I can get some jobs done i have put off for months, do some recces on new areas, stock up on bait, and more than anything consolidate on everything i learnt last season. Which i hope in due course will turn out more top end Barbel this coming season.
I dont agree with the closed season at all, especially the rivers i fish. That's the way it is, and until it changes i have to accept this. As we all will.
There's more to fishing than Barbelling.
Roll on June

The lack of winter sessions has compounded things. I mostly had my fix of ten days fishing in March - though now having gone through all my tackle, made 20 rigs, cleaned the garden & being fairly bright outside I have itchy feet & fingers - kinda playing pretty.

Its good to reflect on the last year, get the fishing diary out, look at new spots & studying maps. Planning a few reccy sessions & have a good smart cast around, so hopefully this investment of time will help with a strategy next season where time will be more tight.

I concur with you Jon on the closed season re rivers - most attitudes have changed dramatically over the last 20 years. Fact - even in season, the rivers receive very, very little angler pressure. Hey ho for the interim...

Cheers, Jon

I find its always lurking at the back of my mind, but because i cannot go, thats where it stays. Even yesterday i dropped a rod off to a fellow BFWer and spent the next 75 mins talking about it. I am planning my new season with vigour, quietly in my mind, rigs, baits, areas etc.
Your bang on Jon,with what you say about how little attention rivers get these days.

Having just finished off the Winter/Spring piking, I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next couple of months after tench, eels and maybe an elusive carp on large gravel pit. With another crack at a big Zander available too in this period, I feel quite liberated away from those bleedin' rivers.

Helps to maintain a sense of perspective on your fishing and challenge yourself with a different set of watercraft/baiting scenarios.

I think that my son and i were chubbing from December through till March never managed to get out in any of the tiny windows when a barbel may have been on the cards, always nice to be on the bank though......Close season gives me a chance to look back over the season and plan for the coming one, a fresh start. Make a freezer full of boilies, get the garden in shape, put a lick of paint around the place, tie up some rigs, then count down the days until opening day.........Magic.

I'm working like a trojan getting last years garden jobs done!!! not to mention this years jobs too.

Next job is the tackle den to build and possibly my favourite one to do this close season..

I wasn't enjoying sitting under a brolly during a very heavy hail storm yesterday afternoon but I enjoyed the 14 lbs pike that took my bait less than 2 minutes after the hail stopped.

I am :)
Did my first session on 'the big windy pit' yesterday and had quite a few bream between 7-8lbs. The tench are already starting to wake up and as soon as they do properly, I'll be chasing them 'til the end of July.

Barbel can wait til end October :p
