Snowbee salmon gye landing net

Contemplating whether to buy 1 of these, the main factor is.... Are they suitable for barbel and are they any good?

Cheers

If it is the one with a round frame I wouldn't bother. I use a McLean salmon weigh net for barbel, salmon and sea trout. Better shape, a lot lighter. Built so strong it should last forever and you can weigh the fish in the net. If you roam about and wade this is the net for you.

Hi men,

Pete , I looked at that one , it's a shame the handle is a bit short for some of the places we fish .

The thing with the McLean net is that it is so strong and rigid that you can actually make full use of the handle length. You won't be able to do that with a large fish on the snowbee. You will have to get into the water now and again with any salmon net, and you can't use it from high up a bank......but it isn't designed for that are nor are any salmon style nets. If I am fishing in those type of circumstance and can't get level with the fish I use one of those extendible carbon handles (is it a Drennon?) designed for such a purpose.

The Mclean gets my vote, very good for pike too, would deal with a 30lb fish no problem, I,ve had mine for 3 years, and often have it on my back for 12hours+ a day, very easy to carry and deploy. The only other alternative is the Whitlock net, good , but even more expensive.

I would imagine that the handle of the Mclean net Pete recommends would be made from a length of standard diameter tubing....these things are made from available materials usually. If you are fortunate enough to be able to afford one of these nets, you would only need a tiny bit more good fortune to shine down on you to find that if you removed the plastic hand grip, the handle might fit into the body of one of the extendible style handles :D Worth a thought. The larger section could then be carried in your sling, to use in the more demanding swims :)

Cheers, Dave.

Hi Guys,

I've been using the Wychwood Bowframe net for two years and have had no problems with it. It is very lightweight and I've had barbel to over 15lb in it. For £35 it's well worth a look. all the others i tried were very heavy for roving.

Regards,

Jeff
