Slow cooker hempseed

Hello, maybe this is already a well known method for cooking hemp...but I have not read of this elsewhere so thought I would share.
We recently upgraded our slow cooker (excellent for cooking lamb curry btw) so I claimed the old one for bait making. Just add the dry hemp and cover by approx 1" water (used rainwater) and soak overnight. Next morning turn the cooker on and by the time you get back fro work you have wonderful quality cooked hemp, split lovely in an oily aromatic liquid. The hemp really does ooze oil when put in the river.
Slow cookers can be bought fairly cheaply...and very little fuss using this method - probably a damn site cheaper than boiling also,
Unfortunately didn't catch any barbel when using it but it certainly got the roach and chub feeding, I think it could be a real winner for warmer water barbel

For small amounts I use an old Thermos flask half filled with hemp then topped with boiling water. Ready in a couple of hours and no stinking the kitchen out!

The other firm favourite for larger quantities than a flask can do is a big cool box. fill it 2/3 with hemp, pour boiling water in to an inch or two above the hemp, leave overnight (or longer). Pays to check water levels half way through, make sure the hemp is still covered, top up with more boiling water as required. Result = nicely done hemp.

I do like the slow cooker idea though, the more ways of doing it the better.

Cheers, Dave.

Because your cooking in a closed lid pot there is no smell and very little water needed for the actual cooking...the hemp just stewing in concentrated juices gives a lovely slick.

Nice one Alan, thanks for sharing...I knew there was a use for that slow cooker in the cupboard that my Missus never uses :D
Bet she'll want it now

That's exactly how Prof. Horak preps his, and he knows a thing or two about fishing with hemp. I've tried it a time or two with mixed success, maybe my cooler box is ****, but I've found it worked better when the cooler box is wrapped up in a old five season sleeping bag. There's nothing like the aroma of hemp for those cold winter nights..

Just use it once Bill and she won't want it then :)

Thanks for sharing, that's a great idea. I'll be investing in some hemp now, always found it to be a bit of pain previously.

Wouldn't a slow cooker stink the room out, when I cook a joint in mine the kitchen smells sll lovely and meaty

I couldn't getaway with any smell in my house, I soak large batches for 48 hours, then cook it in s pressure cooker until the release valve pops up and it always cooks it perfectly with no smell

No smell with the lid on ....until you open it! But if concerned use it in garage or she Did?
Hadn't thought about pressure cooker....might try that also if allowed

It works a treat but I wouldn't use one your mrs will be expecting to use after, mine has a coating of crud on it now that I reckon I'd need a blowtorch to get rid of

And be careful about how much you fill it, there are stories out there of overfilled exploding pressure cookers and industrial clean up operations

Alan, better still, cook your hemp in the house, and move the Mrs into the garage. :D

I've tried all of these methods and gone back to just soaking with no cooking as recommended by Fred Crouch. That is assuming that it's not for use on the hook
