shropshire eel release

Neil they showed a short clip of the release on BBC Midlands today at 6 30 tonight .
Why cant they catch more Elvers ? and release in to rivers all over the country ? Its not rocket science .

I had a look at this . Interesting that in one area eel numbers are at a 30 year high and in others they are hardly present ? I know that in all the Yorkshire rivers that I fish an eel is a rare sight / capture . Hard to see why there would be such apparent wide fluctuation in eel numbers

Great work going on there, and good to see the kids getting some hands on natural history education.

Wish they'd stock some of the Gt Ouse catchment area with the little things. Might give our local fishes a break from them cursed otters.

The last 2 years have seen record run of elevers in to our rivers but a still long way to go before we can say that eels are safe . Anglers are changing there thoughts on eels and seem to get a bit more respect then they did in 80s/90s. With the N.A.C membership of around 100 eel anglers things are on the slight rise

With the buying price down to just £50/kg at the Elver station this year, I don't know why the EA couldn't spend a few (of our) shekels and stock a number of rivers across the UK with Severn caught fish, or have they done so?.

Steve why cant the EA catch them ? Then move them to different rivers ?

They wouldn't need too Joe, and it would be prohibitively expensive if they tried anyway

It strikes me that the EA deptartment managing eel stocks would be well aware of the quantities being presented to the elver stations. The stations have a defined maximum they can take, by law. So, large numbers being caught early, as in the last two years, and the price plummets, as the stations quickly realise that they will reach their quota before the end of the allowed fishing period.

This leaves elvermen with time available to continue catching but no real outlet. So the EA could agree a deal direct with them to purchase. They could take every last one (assuming they have the storage/transport facilities available), knowing the whole lot would be used for restocking purposes - billions of them.

Isn't that a win / win ? :)
