Shimano XT4000 FA

Just wondering if anyone has any experience of these reels? If you have, have you also used the DL4000 FA? Is the difference in price really reflected in the performance?

Can't really afford the XT as I have other stuff I need to purchase, but trying to decide whether to break the bank.

Hi Martin,
I've had the DLFA's in both 2500 and 4000 since they came out.Never had a problem with them and certainly didn't consider trading up when the XT came out.The XT is a touch heavier (5grams) which is negligible, the retrieve ratio is the same, line capacity is the same,so as far as I can see you're gaining an extra ball race and I think a one piece bail arm as well as 5 grams.Whichever you decide I've PM'd you with a phone number as you're fairly local to me,where you'd get a good deal.
Regards
Pete.

Different drag on the XTFA (appears to be the same as that on the 4000D but without the waterproofing components) compared to the DLFA, as well as the extra bearings/different bail arm. The XTFA also has the newer ARC lipped spools which do improve the casting performance.

I tend to think of the XTFA as a very slightly cut down D but without the waterproofing and a bonus of spools with a proper line clip and a spare spool included.

Whether those differences over the DLFA are worth the extra thirty quid is entirely down to the individual. However, I feel that the XTFA is worth the extra and is actually a better value for money buy than the 4000D.
