Shimano Thunnus 6000 vs Shimano 6000D

Is it really worth the money to buy the Shimano Thunnus 6000 instead of the Shimano 6000D ?
Present prices ,, Thunnus £265 ,6000D £130 .

It's down to an individual buyer to decide. Given an unlimited budget, I'd have a Thunnus in a heartbeat. I prefer the look of them and value the weight saving that the premium Ci4+ material gives. There's an ounce or two between every equivalent size Thunnus and D model. I dare say that the three extra bearings will make a difference too, though it may not be particularly obvious.

As things stand, I'm barely using the Baitrunner Ds I already have. The Thunnus are not worth me spending my money on. However, if I started to leger for barbel again on a regular basis, that may well change.

The OC will do everything the D will do. You won't be able to tell the difference in use, and they look less bling.

For me the choice would be between the OC and the Thunnus. I've never used a Thunnus, I'm sure they are wonderful...but having used OC's in 4000 and 6000 and therefore knowing how good they are, for £104.99 it would be a no brainer for me.

I’ve got all 3.
I’ve had them all in good use, I’ve had them all in bits and I can give a good solid opinion on them.

Joe is dead right on the money. It’s not a case of D vs thunnus it’s a case of OC vs Thunnus because a course angler is not going to feel any benefits whatsoever between a d and OC and there for the D upgrades are pointless to us guys.

The weights of the thunnus in the hand against the D/OC is practically unnoticeable. It would be a waste of money buying based on body material alone imo because 1 the rod is in the rest most of the time and 2 the difference is hardly noticeable.
Between the OC and the thunnus 6000 it’s just over an ounce.

The hardened gears, extra seals and 2 of the extra bearings again are not really something a barbel guy is going to get £130 worth extra out of the reel.

But…… where thunnus shines like a diamond is in 2 key areas.
1 the size of the main gear. It’s huge it’s powerful and trust me when I say .. this thing cranks for a laugh.

2 the spool on the 4000 or under the spool on the 6000/8000 . It has a bearing in it and most people wouldn’t know it was there.
This bearing replaces the shims that the spool is tightened up against with the drag knob.
You hear a lot of people describing their drags as “silky smooth”.
They should try a thunnus because in the clutch department it is streets ahead of the other baitrunners. Bearing assistance on the clutch is just …….. the best it can be.

So in a nutshell

OC ….. best bang for buck no question.

D …… spend the extra if you like gold.

Thunnus……. Another 130 quid for more cranking power and the best clutch money can buy. Other features not going to be noticed by course anglers.

Salt water fishing where these reels were originally designed for use…… another story entirely and the D upgrades play a nice part with the Thunnus shining firing on all cylinders….. even weight when used as a spinning reel
