Scales????

Ben Cook

Senior Member
I'm after a new set of scales just wondered what everyone else is using? Main thing is there not too big as I like to travel light so being able to stuff them in a pocket would be nice.

Cheers .Ben

Jon do these weigh in pounds & ounces with 16 ounce to the pound. Only I paid a lot more than this for a set of digis and the ones I got weigh in Kg Lb and oz but when in lb mode the pound is decimal as in 10 what ever to the pound.
I don't think I've explained this very well but hope you get my drift.
Thanks for any help. and when's Jim going to get in to these Tidal Barbel??.

Scaz, Wilko were selling off cheapo digi scales for a couple of quid. They were called the Royal Traveller. I wouldn't be without a set of these. Until I used this balance, I hadn't realised just how big some of the barbel are, that I have caught. I've had barbel up to 25lb and one chub I had went over 12lb. So, no more nonsense about Jim's failures! I've abandoned a £10 YGA balance as this considerably under-read compared to the Royal Traveller, no doubt the YGA balance was faulty. It is possible to get the dual readout with Imperial readings in lb and oz, - I think that Salter might do them.

Cheers guys I've got the rapala ones at the minute but started playing up a bit! What analogue ones people using not to keen on digital ones

One thing i've noticed with the Rapala's is that the tare function is not good.

Don't use it and weight the net afterwards, otherwise your catch will weight a lot more than you think. I suspect a few have made this mistake, and probably unknowingly believe they have caught a larger than avaerage barbel. Mind you it could be just that I have a duff pair ;)

eddie ,new member, i got a set of flagden , electronic scales, in pounds and kilos, light weight and cheap £25 had them for ages, i always checking them,

as we all know barbel sizes are decieving ,you get very long slender barbs and short stocky ones, , but i always go off the girth, meaning i can barley get my finger across its body to hold it in my hand, thats when my josey wales come out,{scales} lol

Yeah I never use the tare function on the rapalas,I know my sling weighs 12oz so just deduct that from my fish! I've replaced the battery seems to have solved my problem, might get a set of the avons aswell though!

Not sure if this will help but if you are not in a hurry for your new scales it my be worth waiting a while (I am). This is all from memory but as a couple of months ago there was a news item in Angling Times (I think) that Ruben Heaton were going to start marketing a set of digital scales that were tube shaped (like a fat spring balance) so should store easily. Around £25 (I think). Due out March?

Try the Salter Electro Samson Digital Scales!!
Bob has done a review on them in the BFW's review pages:)

Yes, they're accurate and excellent.

And anybody weighing their fish, then subtracting the "known" weight of their sling can think again if they want an accurate weight.

Don't go claiming any records using that method, chaps.

Zero your scales with the sling ON, then add fish and read off. :)

I've got a set of Avon 40 pounders which live in my carp bag and a set of those dreadful 30lb weigh-masters in my barbel bag, I also have a set of electronic scales at home which mostly get used for weighing my suitcases. I regularly check the three sets against each other but trust that should I ever need to claim a record the man from the Anglers Mail will have a decent set of scales and know how to use them.

I haven't had any problems with the flyweight's. My local tackle shop recommended them and many of the pro's don't seem to worry while using them. Might go search up this thread.

Ah just looked that's a shame. I really liked them, Fits so easily in the zipped clear pocket of my ruck bag, but now every time I weigh something I'm going to wonder if its accurate:(
