Rod recommendation

If you’ve been following my recent update on my son’s fishing achievements you’ll know exactly where I’m going with this.

He needs a rod and it needs to suit him comfortably. He’s only 7 years old so I’m thinking 10ft ideally. He gets on ok with my 11’s but a foot shorter might be a bit better yet for him.

He’s a jammy sod and seems to hook the big ens so it has got to be a capable rod but nice and light So that he can manage it comfortably.

I’m not putting a budget up because I’m not planning on buying twice so it needs to be right.

Light, capable, not too long and and something a 7 year old is going to really enjoy for a number of years. Any recommendations would be very greatfull
 
What about a 7ft river ambush from angling direct? 1.75 tc good enough for barbel. 10ft wise, Harrison stalking rod in 1.75?

But from my personal experience, when I was his age, I mainly fish with a 8ft rod, still remember how had it is for me to cast with a 10ft rod…

The issue is he’s not a tall lad and our bank is littered with cabbages and snags etc. he needs some extension there to keep them out the inside snags. There’s gonna be a compromise I think and 10ft seems like the middle ground for him. Plus when he’s 11 and 12 etc a 10ft rod is still going to be a good useful length for him.
He’ll grow out of an 8 footer quick I think.
 
Good shout, @Huanzhou Zhu Harrison Stalker 10ft 1.75tc is definitely an option, if budget isn’t an issue.

A Mark Tunley one is going to go circa £350 even at the more ‘basic’ end of his offered specs.

Peregrine do one for £295 inc postage, although haven’t looked closely at the specs on that.

I was looking at options for a rod for my the youngest step-nipper a few weeks back (which I could put to good use too, obvs 😂). Like you, thinking 10ft is the ideal length and will do for him until mid teens, possibly.

The Korum Opportunist 10ft 2.25tc is a budget option, but Minima guides… 😑 Was thinking the slight increase in TC might be good for overcompensating in lack of experience (something your lad doesn’t need by the looks!).

I’ve already got the latter, but only used as a baitdropper rod, so can’t give any kind of review. They’re quite well rated for the money though.

Korum opportunist 10ft is a good option, but I wouldn’t go for the high tc since it makes the rod heavier. Also, I actually would pick a rod with through action to overcompensate the lack of experience problem, let the rod do the job for you.

you will also be pleasently surprised with this rod.

1.75 ideally Peter cheers. We are fishing with 1-2oz leads at the most. He doesn’t need mega power.

Yeah I had a look at these. Cheap for a twin top. Do you think they’ll be ok? I’m always worried when something is cheap. It’s usually crap that doesn’t last. Options on 10ft rods are quite limited mind.

This is the second best option I think? I dont think there are many 10ft specialist rod available. This is a cheaper alternative to the Harrison, but I wouldn’t worry too much about the quality. Sure, the rod won’t be as nice as a Harrison, but it should have no problem to land some hard fighting fish. I landed a double figure carp this year on a £15 rod, and it really changes my opinion on cheap rods now.

I’ll give one a bash then.
I think 10ft 1.75 will be absolutely ideal for him. He managed fine with my 11ft Torrixs but had they been a fraction shorter it would of be even better for him. 👍🏻
 
Spinning rods with an appropriate action are worth a look. There will certainly be more to choose from in the shorter lengths.
 
It all points to a JW Avon imo. Robust and with the older models have a a wonderful angling heritage. Good enough for doubles and not over gunned for smaller fish.
