Rod difference Harrison

Hi Guys.

Could one of you builders, or an owner give me some basic information, re a rod I'm looking at?

I'm after a bit of an all round roving rod. Something I can use with 6lb line for perch, but up to 10lb in a push for free-lining for barbel.

The two rods I've short listed are both 11' Harrison's.

One is the 1.6 Chimera from Dave's angling, the other the Torrex specialist 1.5lb.

Not much in price between the two. I need to hold the rod all day, feel a 3lb perch, and land a big barbel if required.

I prefer to feel my fish and fish slightly lighter than most, so can anyone tell me the main difference in the two, and knowing my requirements, what rod would suit me best PLEASE?:D

Thanks all.

Richard.

Sorry Richard, whilst this is not on your shortlist have you considered the 1.75 Gti? Not as heavy as it sounds and would appear to match your requirements. I have a Peregrine version which has a ground blank and is a joy to use. However, it's not for a flooded or snaggy river IMO.

Thanks Anthony.

But it sounds just too heavy 1.75lb?

Are you saying it's lighter than 1.75lb

Thanks anyway, grateful and food for thought.

Richard. There is, or was a 1.6 su Avon on a Harrison blank. Not sure if this is the Chimera.

I had a waggle and it would be ideal for perch chub and barbel. Soft enough in the tip yet seemed very progressive.

The 11ft, 1.25 Chimera Avon is a fantastic perch rod - perfect with 6lb line. It will deal with bigger fish, but I wouldn't want to be specifically targeting barbel with it, even when freelining.

Harrison's also do a 11ft 1.5lb Chimera Avon which perhaps might suit you a bit better, I've never handled one though. The 12ft 1lb 8oz (Chimera 1) is a really versatile rod can be fished with 6-10lb mainline.

The Torrix 11 1.75lb is very highly regarded for rolling meat for barbel - probably a bit heavy for perch though.

Richard it's a very forgiving rod with a great through-action which reduces hook pulls. I've numerous other 1.75 rods which feel much stiffer, but then again have the same test curve because of the way this is determined. Try and get your hands on one, then you'll know what I mean. I also use it for zander, because the rod cushions the violent headshakes when the fish are close to being netted.

It's a slim blank and feels light in the hand. I'm not getting any commission by singing its praises, but it is my go for rod on the Nidd where it's handled barbel to just over eleven with aplomb.

Great rod...but I've only just taught my Torrix 11ft/1.75 how to catch barbel whilst freelining...it insisted on catching chub after chub after chub on its first three outings. Still, since it's learnt, I've not blanked with it.

Anthony.

Is this the same rod being sold by Dave's tackle as the Harrison s/u Avon, do you think? 1.10oz cannot be too many around can there? I do like the look of it to be honest. I'm not able to link, sorry rather dumb on that. But please look for me if you would.

Thanks again.;)

Is this the one/

I think it's a different rod and sounds like it's for heavier fish reading the description

Mine is this one:

How far from the Newark area are you based? I'll be on the Trent sometime next week so could let you have a waggle. personally, I would strongly recommend against buying any rod until you've had one in your hands first. PM me if needed.

A number of options at 11' from Harrison. I'll deal with those with a test curve of 1.5 and below:

11' Torrix at 1.5 (sometimes referred to as the Torrix Avon and designed as a higher tech material Avon variant).

11' Avon (2 piece) at 1lb 6oz (often referred as 1.06)
11' Avon 4 piece at 1.5lb.
11' Triptych (3 piece) at 1.5lb (can be difficult to buy at times)

Worth a mention is the 12' Torrix at 1.25 and 1.5.
Undoubtedly others and specials that I have missed as Harrison make some limited exclusives. There are other possibilities involving cut down and spliced other blanks.

Personally as a jack of 'most' trades use an adapted 1.5 11' Torrix twin tip - one tip with plugin quivers and the other plain.
A shortened to 11' 1.25 12' Torrix with quivers.
I've also a liking for the standard Avon (1lb 6oz) which maybe a good choice as it (IMO) is through and soft.

Most of the above are possibly biased more towards barbel.

The 11' Avon SU is quoted by Harrison as 1.75 (1lb 12oz).
Be cautious about test curves when selecting a rod.

Hope this helps,
Bob

My all rounder for the Stour and Avon is a 1.5 medium action rod Richard,.... it handles barbel with ease and is also my preferred rolling rod. It's also great for Perch and chub.
I use a Torrix 1.75 for out and out barbel fishing but would consider it too beefy for perch etc. Maybe that's just personal preferences.
I thought something along the lines of this one might suit your original required specs?

Sums it up - I have one and it's an absolute pleasure to use, very lightweight and through actioned. Use it for perch on minnows/lobs, odd bit of tench fishing and chubbing.
Have landed quite a few decent barbel on it too, not by design, and unsurprisingly not very good for putting the brakes on in snaggy swims.
