Richard Walker Mk 4 Avon (after info)

A friend of mine has a lovely Mk4 Avon that he is looking to sell on and he is after any info that people might have on it and a rough idea of value etc.
The rod is a Richard Walker 10ft MK4 Avon By Youngs of Harrow under their otter brand. The rod is unused for the last 30 years and to be totally honest i would say its unused from new. Here are a few photos which might be of help.
Cheers Jez

A new one is going to cost £300 +

This looks in great condition from the pictures. I've seen Hardy ones go for silly money on E bay, so it may be worth listing it. The alternative is to go along to one of the antique tackle fairs. If you know Gary Mills, he's a good bloke to ask as he tends to know most things about antique gear.

Pete, it is absolutely mint i'm tempted myself but er indoors would kill me lol. I might get Rich to take it over to Gary for his opinion on it.

Try buying it her for Xmas.......

I nearly bought one of those on Pre Loved the other week, it was in OK condition and the guy wanted £150, on specialist auctions they go for £300 plus.

What about we say £100 :)

Realistically, it's likely to fetch somewhere between £180 and £250, given the ongoing preference (inexplicably) for B James models. Ebay, for all its limitations and horror stories, is still as good a place as any to test the waters re: price. Very few MK IVs or Avons fetch more than £300 at present, unless they have a specific history or rarity attached to them. You could try the auction houses or antique tackle fairs, but remember that these are populated by dealers who will look to buy cheap and sell high.

I don't want to put you off Jeremy, it's a lovely rod and one i would happily buy myself (and I already have way too much panda food in the tackle den) but unless you find someone with a real preference for collecting Otter brand rods, i'd say set yourself a realistic mimimum of £200 and consider anything above that as a bonus.

cheers

Jon

Hi chaps.. five or six years on, is this lovely Avon rod still out there and in need of one careful, loving owner..? Clive Young was a wonderful man and he and step Dad Jack made some cracking rods, every bit as good as B James etc (as Jon B) mentions.

I sold one last year in absolute mint condition for £375 if I remember right. But it was very special. The guy who brought it thought it a bargain, after all you only buy one normally. I think if I could afford it I'd have one built for around £600 now days.

Mark IV style Avon rods are not fetching huge money at the moment . That looks a nice original rod , if the ferrules are still tight , there is no delamination , the decals are 100% intact and it has it's original bag I would expect to get £200 for it , maybe a little more [ this would be on E bay ] If you put it in a specialist auction you may get more BUT the commission would be greater .

Someone mentioned on another thread. It only has to have something unforeseen under the wraps and it cost to have it restored. If I was buying second hand I'd pay a price based on that I would have to have it fully restored sooner or later, even from a specialised dealer.

I know you can get a new one for around £600. If you buy used for say £250, then had some restoration for £100+ £350? I'd rather buy new myself.

I have a new 1.75lb 11' two piece cane rod. It's simply fantastic. And I know it will last as long as I care for it. Ideal barbel or tench, carp rod. Much better with the extra foot too in my view.:)

Test curves can be very misleading, but my favourite tench rods are 1.75lb (carbon not cane). I guess it depends what size tench you are fishing for and the distances you need to cast.
