Reuben Heaton Mk2 Scales

Reuben Heaton Mk2 Scales

My partner bought me some new scales for my birthday in March as my old set finally gave up after many years service.

Last night I was fishing in that appalling weather and caught some nice Carp on the float (Only due to bad Barbel conditions) one of them looked around the 20 lb mark so out came the scales that had never seen any daylight I may add

So prepared the fish for weighing which included zeroing the scales with a wet sling etc
The first attempt to weigh the fish ended abruptly as a flip and kick from the fish whilst trying to weigh completely wrecked the scales – straight out of calibration and unable to zero them as the dial indication was so far from zero!

Why is a lot of stuff we buy these days not fit for purpose ?

They have gone back to Reuben Heaton in the post with a letter today but I think I need some better quality scales so what can you guys recommend ?

If thats the fly weights, ? then they have gone to the best place, just pray they don't send them back to you.... have a search around and get a set of Avons, not made anymore i think but still a few new sets kicking around.

If you are looking for dial scales then as already been said go for the avons, but i would suggest a set of the salter electro samsons great scales and deadly accurate.....Read Bobs review, where! in the review section:)

Electro Samson look good but 13.4 inches by 4 inches by 2 inches, and half a kilo in weight, they are hardly covert!! I would have to get a bigger bag!!

John, that review was written by Bob in 2002 ....are there no reviews/news of anything better (or at least smaller/lighter :D) since then?

Incidentally, I believe the scales mentioned are sold re-badged by several outlets, judging by the size, weight, shape and quoted accuracy. I did see them several months back on a site (from America I believe) at fifty odd pounds delivered...I just can't remember the site

Cheers, Dave.

Here's one such link - just noticed that they are using my review - cheeker blighters!

There were some very nice compact scales and accurate too - unfortunately these have been replaced - they were called the Jennings Ultrasport 25. They have been replaced buy the UltraSport 30 of which I have little experience.

If you can find some 25's then go for them - top weight though is 25lb. Backlight, tare, zero, kgs, lbs and lbs and ounces.

Cheers

My opinion is mixed about the Electro Samsons.

The first set I had were faulty - they would zero OK, but then the indicated weight climbed steadily, e.g went from 0:00 to 2:13 in 30 seconds. They were replaced.

The replacement was OK, but I hadn't had it long before it got nicked along with most of my other gear - can't really blame the scales for that, I suppose! So, I bought another set.

The third set burned down, fell over, and then sank into the swamp...no, wait, wrong film...

The third set seemed to be OK at first, but last time out they were temperamental and wouldn't switch on. I tried three batteries with the same result. Now, it may be that all three batteries were flat and I haven't tried a known fresh one yet, but I'm seriously considering getting a good old-fashioned set of analogue scales (if only to shut Mike-the-luddite up!)

Thats bad luck Robin, have had my samsons for quite a few seasons now and never had a problem with them not the smallest scales i agree but thats not a problem for me, if you were roving then that is a different matter, the jennings ultrasport 25 as Bob says were good but you would have to search hard to find a set, very mixed reviews on the fox digitals, i have seen nothing to sway me from the electro samsons even if they are big and old like me:(

Many thanks for that Bob, great info as ever.

Two questions...were the now unobtainable Jennings 25's a great deal better than the new 30's ?...and in what way? (or should I say weigh :D)

Why oh why are these scales available in America at a straight $ for £ price? Why are we ALWAYS ripped off?

Cheers, Dave.

Scales

For information: there are some second-hand Reuben Heaton Specimen Hunter scales 60lb in 1 oz increments currently for sale on tackletrader for £48 delivered.

I actually tried a set of Ultrasport 30's and maybe I was unlucky - the kgs and pounds and points of a pound were spot on, however, the pounds and ounces were daftly out.
Andy F kindly walked back to his Landy to get his scales when I caught a nice double that looked bigger than these scales said. I returned them to the supplier and was lucky enough to find a set of new UltraSport 25's.

Picture of the UltraSport25's with a Kingpin Imperial 4.25" for size comparison:
