Why is it that certain contributors to BFW only deem a fish in excess of the magical ten pound barrier worthy of their consideration.

Terms such as ' splasher' and ' only managed a seven pounder ' are an insult to the magnificent barbel.

One of my most memorable captures was a beautiful little fish of a pound.

All barbel are worth catching!

And in the real world.................we all prefer bigger fish, thats why!

I LIKE to catch bigger fish, yes, I agree but I'd rather have the sport of a couple of 6's than b****r all!!!:D....I got hung up with big fish in my carping days and in the end it did for me....besides I haven't caught enough Barbel to even consider being picky...I like catching Barbel...:)

Two things I remember well:-
(1) a post on here by a chap who had apparently had a bad day - no Barbel, just a 6lb 7oz Chub! (Northern river where 5lb'ers are still THE target)
(2) My capture of a 7" Barbel a few years ago - lovely little fish.

Fished middle severn caught 3 barbel biggest only just over 9 lb. I try to explain a barbel over 8 lb is a good barbel off the middle

I respect all the Barbel ,what ever the size .:)

AND They are all splashers ,well its the sound made after i chuck em back.

Hi men,

Not the case with me and Sue . Given the choice between a stretch with some gooduns in it , or a bit with small fish BUT you can see them , watch them feeding , and stalk them , there is no contest . In fact it's what we are continually searching for , a bit of heaven .

There's something else needs to be said if we're going on about this - 'one mans food can be another mans poison'

If you like or prefer catching big Barbel - fine !
If you like or prefer catching smaller barbel - fine !
If you couldn't care less what size of Barbel you catch - fine !
and if you couldn't care less whether you caught a barbel or not - That's fine too !

It Irks me when i hear people taking the pee out of people who like to catch whatever comes their way, it Irks me too when i hear people like yourself Hugo - Ian - whatever you like to call - yourself ... critisising people who have a little name for a particular size of Barbel - Splasher...big 'un...dubs... so what !
I don't see any disrespect intended by these names, only that it possibly infers someone's preference in size they may like to target - or not, i don't think it's for you to pass judgement in your holier than thou outlook Hugo !

All the above gets my vote.

The most notable catch I vividly remember is my smallest ever barbel, must have been 8 ounces if that but in perfect condition like it was straight out of the wrapper.

Why do people get so het up about fishing? I've never known such a fickle person as the angler!

Relax.....its just fishing.

Correct Ian G, let everyone get on with what they fish for;) I just love fishing for barbel, irrespective of size.

You would have to have the brain of a flea to interpret that as a threat Chris.

I'm not going to entertain you with an explanation, if you can't figure out the meaning for yourself.

That,s the first time i've had a post moderated on these boards, and it'll be the last.

Ian.

For me the ideal scenario is to fish a river/stretch that contains big fish but also have access to a location that has more barbel but of a more modest size. You have to get in the right frame of mind to put in the hard work and frequent blanks fishing for specimens and it's nice every so often to drop back to a more prolific water and catch a few. Toppng up the enthusiasm, just like topping up the car! :)

I enjoy my occasional sorties to the Wye and the Severn to catch barbel no matter what size they are and to sit in different surroundings. But if I want to catch bigger barbel and give my self a chance of a decent double I know a few pegs on the upper Trent where I have a good chance of doing so. Mind you I'd probably sit bite less for god knows how many hours before I get one. Each to their own. I fairly sure we all respect our quarry no matter how big.

'Splashers'

Hi guys,
Each to their own for me. I think Ians philosophy is spot on. P.S. If you think anglers can be a little opinionated and 'one eyed' then have a look at golfers:eek:

G.T.

i prefer to catch what i set out to catch, when fishing for barbel i love catching em, bigguns are good but all of em are barbel:)and thats what i love fishing for:)

I can vividly remember the capture of my first Severn barbel - it was a Friday evening in July 1963, first week of the school summer holidays. I was fishing for dace at the time and the fish weighed about 8ozs. I didn't know what it was until an old bloke fishing next to me said, 'it's one of those barbel things - they put them in the river a few years ago.'
I also remember fishing in a match in the early seventies - apparently, someone about a mile upstream had caught a huge barbel. Several of us hiked along the riverbank to watch it being weighed - the scales levelled out at just over 7lbs - we were awestruck!
