Removing rod varnish

Richard Lomas

Senior Member
I need to remove some varnish(poly type rather than epoxy)from one of my rods and would like some advice on the easiest/best way to do this.

Avoiding damage to the blank is a priority as it has a wrap over the core blank.

thanks

Varnish Removal

Hi

I've previously used varnish remover (Polycell I think) and worked in small strips just leaving it on long enough to blister the varnish so I could scrape it away with a plastic tool.

Just a word of warning though, it was fine on a glassfibre blank but i used it on an armalite and it took off the surface coating of the blank leaving lots of fluffy flecks. The rod builder in the local tackle shop always scrapes off the varnish on the rods he's refurbing with a blunt knife taking care not to dig into the blank.

Whatever you choose to do, good luck!
