Reels

I'm wondering if the diameter of a reels spool influences how good the drag is. Is a large diameter spool better than a small diameter spool or small better than large?

Think its more to do with the reel itself, I use Ci4+ for carp fishing and was never pleased with the felt washer Shimano use, replaced with carbon and definitely feels smoother to me.
A decent quality reel should have a smooth drag, I have a Daiwa TDR 3012 exceptional drag, just purchased a Caldia 4000 for my Barbel fishing used at the weekend non snatch drag so that's a plus.

Yes John the TDR's are good as are the Matchwinners and the Theory SP's, but would a 4012 or 3012 the drag washers etc are probably the same so which would perform better?

It's the number, material and surface area of drag washers that make the biggest difference to a drag. A big spool might, for a front drag reel, indicate that larger drag washers have been used, but there's no guarantee. A big spool could just as easily house a low number of small washers of a poor quality material.

I have seen some really large fish landed on 2000 - 3500 sized reels due to having great drag systems.

Afraid it is a case on the whole of you get what you pay for. That said there are no doubt some bargains out there but do not have my fingers exactly on the pulse of what reels are available to the European market.
