Reel Help

Morning all,

I am looking for a recommendation for a reel to twin with my Drennan Tench / Specimen 13ft Rod for float fishing stick or waggler for Barbel

Thanks in advance

Regards

Lester

standard 4000 size match reel as light as you can get but if you have short fingers a 3000 is better suited so its a good idea to take the handle into a shop and try the reel on and see if your finger reaches the spool comfortably.

after that its down to budget...plenty to choose from.

I’m assuming that you are fishing running water (river) Lester so my answer has got to be a centrepin. I personally find better line control in achieved with a ‘pin. Which one will depend on your budget. It would probably we a good idea to try one for a trip or two to make sure you a comfortable using one if you haven’t had the joy of a ‘pin.

Likewise I'd recommend a centerpin, fortunately one of the best and lightest centerpins on the market today is also one of the cheapest. The TFG classic, they're available brand new for £60 or even less, a friend got one for £40 a few weeks ago.
Line guards are about £15 if you need one.
Very light (202grams) , very free running and very good quality.
Fishtec offer prompt delivery and 'ex demo' models. £50 presently.

Yes, the original post asked for recommendations to fish with stick and waggler.... That's why I'm surprised the next 2 post recommended centre pins.

A nice Shimano reel with a front drag. Job done. Doesn’t need to be top of the range, even the cheaper Shimanos are good these days. Okuma stuff is worth a shout to, I have a little 2000 size one I use for spinning and it’s a beautiful reel.

I use a centre pin for the stick and a Daiwa Ninja (small and light with front drag) for waggler fishing. I love my Speedias and I also have a Bewick that is running in (it has got some catching up to do to wear as smooth as the vintage reels!)

My last time out fishing the stick for dace I used the drennan 7 series float reel. It did the job adequately.

I've just updated my trotting reel to a Shimano Exage 2500FD, a great improvement over the FB as the chamfered spool lip helps line feed off much smoother than the old straight edged spool. I do enjoy using a pin as well but the fixed spool is more versatile.

Been looking at reels myself, trying to find a shop to try one is the hardest part. Think I've narrowed it down to a Daiwa ninja 3012/4000/4012 (why so many models) for the float & a pair of Fox Eos 7000 for ledger rods. Couldn't see much difference between the ninja & legalis models, except the price.
