Red Lion up for sale

Sadly, well out of my reach as well. It does seem cheap, given its size and the fishing rights attached, but perhaps that is a reflection of the current state of the economy and property market for this type of business?

I'm sure it's been for sale for a fair amount of time, I suspect there must be plenty of expensive to remedy problems with it.

Up for sale for a reason, usually financial.

Could be a good investment if it's easily accessible for diners and stop overs. My partner and me regularly browse google maps and book a room for no other reason than a meal and short break and the hotels that offer reasonable rates are usually very busy.

From memory it needs an extensive refurb...it probably costs a fortune to heat and post-Brexit it's likely to be a nightmare to recruit reliable, hardworking staff. I see the same agent is also marketing a plethora of other Herefordshire pubs.

I do hope someone is bold enough to take up the challenge of keeping it going.

I am sure this was posted last year ?

Just checked …

Think all the rooms have had major refurb all through the covid period , having stayed quite a few times in the last couple of years - all the rooms were very tidy. Unfortunately the whole area is suffering with pubs shutting down All the local ones except the Yew Tree at Preston on Wye have closed The Hospitality industry is all suffering with staff recruitment / retention and the cost of living. Just hope the Lion goes to someone who will respect the place and the fishery as it is still a fabulous place to stay ( having stayed a lot there for 30 years now ). In the wrong hands they could lose all fishing and non fishing trade

I think another thing going against it is the demise of the fishing on that stretch in comparison to it's heyday of 15/20 years ago.
Well yes, but with pressure on to clean up the river, it has to be great value, if it 8 miles of Wye included. That is the attraction right there in income potential.

Speaking witha group of anglers who had booked a couple on days on the Red Lion stretch last Oct, ,all the indications were that the riverbank on the stretch is virtually inaccessible now except for a very few single swims with a bit of mountaineering involved, they had walked the whole length as well, seems they were very dissolusioned with the pub and river. They seemed a decent bunch of fellows too.
If that is the case anybody leasing the stretch along with the pub would probably have to factor in quite a bit of work with bank maintainance to attract anglers back .

David .

Having fished the whole stretch many times , there are private areas that are overgrown - these being beats that are not accessible to Hotel residents unless they were members , the main 6 beats above the bridge are all accessible - beat 6 has the higher banks and like most fisheries needs a little cutting in at the start of the season to get to the river but I have never had access problems except for slippery banks , people do complain about not being able to drive the fishery later in the season when tracks are very wet ( farmers instruction ) which does make some areas a hike , but travelling light doesnt make it too bad in the winter

So the Wye has steep slippery banks..who knew? Am I right in thinking it tried to cater for the less avdventorous type, you know those who need a guide to catch a fish on the most prolific of rivers.
