Recommend me a rod varnish

I`m shortly doing a full refurb on a couple of glass rods & not having been in the building process for about 20 yrs realise that there is probably something better than the yacht varnish I used to use, which I then coated with some matt stuff.
Many thanks if you can help & possibly give a supplier as well,
Julian

It depends on the finish you want, if you like the modern style then use an epoxy like in the link above, However on glass rods i always prefer the more traditional layers of clear varnish, for a small project like this humbrol clear gloss varnish will be fine, just remember that multiple thin coats will be much better than fewer thick coats. i have tried literally dozens of different varnishes over the years and find humbrol is fine and available cheaply in small tins. Blackfriars supr high gloss yacht varnish is very good and readily available but comes in larger tins. Hope this helps, and feel free to ask any further questions
good luck
Ryan

Rustins yacht varnish is good and comes in matt [ satin I think ] and gloss finish. I am only a fledgling rod restorer but the Rustins was reccommended to me by a pro rod builder/ restorer Chas Burns of 'Burns built rods' who really knows his stuff

Hello & thanks for the info - actually bought a tin of the Rustins on Sunday! Will get a look at the overall finish & may be able to avoid a rewhip I think, at least for the moment.
Thanks for all the help, Julian
