Petworth & Bognor AC worth joining ?

Kevin Webb

As the title suggests, I would be grateful if anyone could offer their thoughts on joining.
I know their rivers are not easy and have a number of other choices ( Pulborough or Dorking ) which are equal distance for me to travel.
Any advice / opinions greatly appreciated before I commit my joining fee.

Nice friendly club with several good stretches of the Rother and the Arun as well as ponds/lakes with generally secure parking.

The quality of (barbel) fishing on most, if not all, of the small Southern rivers has decreased significantly over the past 15-20 years. Having been a member of several clubs with sections of the Mole over the years (but not Dorking), I would take the Rother over the Mole any day of the week.

I've never fished any of Pulborough's waters.

Many thanks Roger. Good to know it’s worth a go.

I've fished both the Mole at Dorking & the Rother. The Mole is easier to catch Barbel, but the Rother is a much nicer & quieter place to fish. It is possible to fish the Rother in the week & not meet anyone else all day.

I also haven't fished any Pulborough stretches. I know they were stocked with Barbel a few years ago, although upon speaking to several people who had fished them, no one had heard of a Barbel being caught.

Thanks Matthew. I’m leaning towards the Rother for the reason you described.
Have you fished the Arun at all?

I fish a feeder stretch further North, but not the main river. A friend of mine did well a few years ago for carp, fishing the Harwood stretch, although I don't know if this stretch is still available for fishing. You used to get tickets for it from the garage in Pulborough.

The flow & the fact its affected by the tides puts me off fishing lower down, that said I think P&BAC still have access to some of the Arun although I believe they have recently lost access to one stretch.

I was told that the Barbel move freely between the two rivers. Pete Springate wrote about fishing the Arun for Barbel in one of his books.
