new barbel rods

ive been thinking about buying some custom made harrison rods by chris orme and would love to hear whether any one else has views and custom builds or any pictures they may have!! currently got two jw youngs 12ft twin tips and two brand new greys rods that are surplus now and fancy the harrisons as my investments..

I've got a couple of Bob Gill's Harrison Torrix flood rods & they are faultless..

Mark Tunley does a great job......Barbel Seeker blank with 3 more rings than standard...spot on.

Chas Burns here in York is a fine rod builder and repairer, he has made a couple of excellent rods for me on Harrison blanks one specialist barbel rod one light float rod .Google burns built rods I think . His shop is called Hooks and Tackle . He does specialise in fly fishing gear as is obvious from his website ,but he will build anything to order , not over pricey either .He gets a lot of excellent feedback on the flay forums .

I'll put a word in for Mark Tunley - he deserves it, as the project I gave him two or three years ago wasn't an easy, standard one. Result was two millimetre-accurate rods to my silly spacings and spec. Very nice finish, too - perfect (not over-blobbed) Flexcoat on the black-only wraps I had specified with very good cork handles.

Here's a few snaps of my i-Power, taken on a phone so not the greatest quality. This particular rod was bought second-hand; the photos were taken so Bob could build a duplicate, which he did (I actually ended up sending the original rod back to him to copy).I now have a matching pair (yes, sad, isn't it?!).

I don't catch any more fish, but the rods are beautiful! I particularly like the reel seat (IPS-DU6 with the duplon replaced by cork), shaped cork handle, and the isoblobs.

Ah I remember that rod, built sometime ago.
Thanks Robin and Paul.
For further examples you can always have a look (or not) at my blog or website.

Bob,

From what I can gather, you built is a sort of "showcase" - it has all your "fancy" work on it. Cost me a fortune to get a duplicate made, as I recall... ;)

oooh! that red silk looks lovely - not sure it will catch more barbel though. 2mm accurate rods? you guys are having a laugh aren't you. Why buy conrad rejects?

Hi Stuart

Nice rod, what reel is that on the rod, it looks like it has a nice big spool

Thanks

Mike

looks are deceiving mike , its a daiwa capricorn 2500, about the same size as a shimano 4000 equivalent front drag model

the whippings are cherry and white , my team colours (wigan warriors)

the blank has a matt/anti flash finish with only the whippings and hook keeper varnished on a 2lb 11ft blank with a butt section made to measure my fore arm

i know others will allways recommend their rod builder , but untill i have another built by somebody else , mark will always get my recommendation
having said that, bob gill will always get a mention too as it was him that told me to speak to mark tunley before i decided who to go with ;)

respek bob ;):D

having said that ,
