Nandos under fire for killing our rivers.

Garry Hall

There are a couple of videos floating around on YouTube etc that are directly blaming Nandos for polluting our rivers with chicken manure.

They are well made and linked to a press release from RIVER ACTION which lists numerous interested groups and celebrities as supporters of the statement.

Hopefully it will get the ball rolling and publicise the awful state of our rivers.

I think a lot of this is driven by a potential claim for £200 million quid that is being handled by a company that, if successful, will benefit to the tune of 30% of the compensation.

Thanks for commenting John. I thought that all interested parties would be pleased to get some publicity and if it gets something done their fees will be well earned

What's wrong with someone else making money sorting out something that will be incredibly difficult to get off the ground?

I fished the Wye years ago and at that time it was a good looking river that ran through some impressive countryside and catching fish was a bonus but I would not want to fish it now. It used to be clear and fast running and you could watch fish moving around but the lack of flow and floating green scum is horrible.

There is also the consideration that is it appropriate to hook and land fish when they are probably going to be in distress and hard to return safely?

There are boats and canoes on all rivers and you have to accept that there other interested parties who want to enjoy the river. It is the same on the Thames and other rivers where the rowers come very close several times in the day and you can lose your gear if you are not careful.

I have rowed with open water swimmers, canoeists and much bigger boats and barges who crash along the river, and do not care that you are fishing but we are coming to a time where there are groups who want access to the rivers and I think that we will have to accept that we have to share them.

If we accept that premise then maybe ‘the enemy of my enemy is my friend’ and we should try to resolve the issues of phosphate pollution together. Funding a legal response to pollution is very expensive and if someone wants to do all the work I think we should support them if we can.

Garry, there is definitely less streamer weed than years ago but your quote .. but the lack of flow and floating green scum is horrible. .. when did you last fish the Wye ? Ive never seen it like that and its still full of fish, especially chub.
