Mid water bait dropper??

Is there something around which would allow me to put a handful of bait - maggots or corn for example at a depth of say 6' in a swim which is deeper?
I might be able to use a spare rod set up for the job. Any ideas welcome!
 
I seem to remember Fred Crouch talking about this very subject once at a meeting. I believe he was making bait droppers with various lengths of metal rod to the weight to achieve exactly that.
i.e a 2' rod releases the bait 2' off the bottom.
