Match Aerial

Reckon I'd use it once, treat it with kid gloves, catch a fish on it then stick it on a shelf in the office.

Last year I did acquire an Aerial (not the Match) in superb condition and it must be getting on for 90 years old. Didn't cost as much as this one on eBay but not far off. I had wanted to "invest" in one of these iconic reels and found it is absolutely superb to use. Wouldn't call it my everyday reel but I used it a great deal last season. It's amazing to think that they pretty much created the perfect barbel pin so long ago and not sure it's been bettered. I look after mine but certainly not with kid gloves and reckon it should hold its value well should I find I need to sell it.

I was presented with this little beauty by Richard Carter by one of my clubs in 1996 .
Haven't a clue what it's worth nowadays, but regardless of value I love catching barbel with it, and it does not live in a glass case, and I will always be forever grateful for such a generous thank you pressie.:)

More than a few quid Dave I would imagine! Lovely reel and should absolutely be used and enjoyed.

Presumably the rarity is pushing the price up, but would you pay this much for a vintage reel and use it? Or, is it simply seen an investment?

Allcocks "Aerial Match" 9053, T1, 4in Centrepin Reel. | eBay

I use vintage tackle a lot , one or two of my cane rods are fairly valuable however in my view they are tools to be used not just looked at . Yes that Aerial was pricy but people pay many thousands for a top end pole or fly rod and use them , what's the difference ? I guess if you are buying vintage tackle purely for investment purposes, and many people do, then they are usually stored away somewhere safe ,' protecting your investment ' as it were . Still a bit of a shame though , it's like having a vintage car and not giving it a run out now and again . Now where did I put that Coxon Aerial ?....................

Mine is in the bag for my opening week on the Wye if things are slow on the feeder. Mind you didn't pay anything like that for mine a few years ago but it's a joy to use (as long as it's not too windy!)

have a look at Paul Whiteings blog he has a few on there but nothing near expensive as the one in question but still does a good job and is a real centrepin:)

Lovely reel, Dave. It would be indecent not to use such a fine example. :)

There's a huge difference in value between the Match Aerial (which was the last Aerial made by Allcocks in the 1960s) and the similarly-named Aerial Match, made for one year only (1939) before the factory switched to production of materials for the war and the moulds for that model were subsequently lost.

Plenty of Match Aerials turn up for sale all the time, but very, very few Aerial Matches - hence the high prices.

I noticed this a couple of weeks ago, the guy had put up on ebay old reels: intrepids and aerealites and so on, all on below £5 starting prices, which they went for… with the exception of one listed as "Here we have a vintage fly fishing reel ,complete with original line . no makers name but has No 15 stamped on bracket" which went for just under £4,000!

That's why I always pop into the charity shop, closest I got was a perfect condition copy of Elvis Presley - I Don't Care If The Sun Don't Shine - with 25p sticker over his name.
