Jerry, if you like the rod and it feels good in the hand then it is worth having it re-furb'ed.

Hi Jerry, The Martin Hooper Barbel rods were made by Sundridge in 1994, They made a 11ft 1.1/2 tc rod, a 12ft 1.3/4 tc rod. they also made a 15ft Martin Hooper Barbel float rod, I am lucky enough to have 6 of these rods 2 of each model. I still use mine the 11ft is a lovely rod to use with a centrepin. The 15ft Barbel float is very rare and fantastic for trotting for Barbel. The great man Martin Hooper can be found these days fishing the Kennet useing these rods and Speedia reels. Hope this helps Jerry.

Have had the good fortune to bump into Martin a few times over the past few years and can report he’s catching very well indeed. Not with Speedias though and I’m not sure but don’t think he’s even got any of his Sundridge rods at all (you’ve got em all Ray!) - one thing for sure, he’s using a couple of Aerials that he can cast like no other I’ve seen for sheer feathered effortless accuracy and distance. Total watercraft. Case in point, late morning 3 days before the end of the season, we’re chatting, I ask where he’d fish it and so he chucks a stone in my swim and tells me I’ll catch a 13lb + fish from there at 5pm and sure enough I did. My first double on a speedia too. He’s given me priceless tips over the times and made my fishing so much better. A true gent. A legend.

Do you suppose the stone hit the barbel on the head, leaving it dazed and confused? By the way, what time was the stone thrown - not 4.55pm?

Joking aside, it's a brilliant story :)

Cheers Rich. Stone went in at about 1.00pm fish came out about 5.45pm so delayed reaction and he was out by 45 minutes. It was much welcome and ended a run of blanks and a PB for me at 13.10. Odd coincidence, the first time I met Martin he was with someone called Richard Parsons - the other one!?

I taught him all he knows.
