maggott shoot …..

is this some kind of bait dropper ?
or a maggot maker ? stuff rotten meat inside and the maggots fall into the flared hopper ?
VINTAGE MAGGOT SHOOT CIRCA 1860 SUPERB | eBay

any one care to enlighten us ?

No takers yet Alan, so let's temp them out :D

Whatever purpose this object serves I can only guess at...but it is almost certainly spelt incorrectly. It should be 'chute', not 'shoot'.

My best guess is that it would be filled with maggot and suspended over a swim to drip feed it (memories of dead sheep stuck in overhanging trees being a match winner :D). Any takers :)

Cheers, Dave.

Ok guys heres a guess,...it's difficult to scale the pic. but it may be a maggot dispenser for feeding chickens,..they still use them now ,...same principle, just made out of plastic instead.

" Gentle Shoot" Miller Catalogue 1904

I have one.

The description almost certainly comes from Jamie Maxtone Graham's book 'Fishing Tackle of Yesterday', where he assumes that 'you could shoot [or throw] maggots out to the water' JMG was not a coarse angler.
This is impossible as the loop at the top is attached to your belt/coat and you just can't do as described. It does however make perfect sense…..when attached to your belt the maggots fall down to the wide funnel end of the bait can and when a maggot is required you tip it up and shoot a few into the circular top chamber where you can pick out as required.
They hold about a cupful of maggots which is about all you could get from pigeon carcass or other carrion. You could not buy maggots in those days and had to procure your own

Quite rare

Of course, I wondered where I had seen one before!

Mike used to use one of these quite a lot, that was, of course in the days before he made his pile!!

These days he has Jeeves sitting by his side on the river bank with his trusty catapult and ready plastic pot with half a gallon or so of maggots.

When he ordered the Aston he had a special refrigerator fitted in the boot, built to his own design it can take up to a gallon of maggots and two bottles of Bollie.

Thus he has no further need of that maggot shooter gizmo.

You always know where Mike is fishing, after all, two chaps on the river bank, one dressed in the latest camo, the other in a morning suit, carrying a large pot, a catapult and a bottle of Champagne!

Not something you see on most club waters?
