Lures

Anybody recomend any lures for Pike?
I've done plenty of bait fishing in the past for Pike but not much on the lure. Looking at the forecast for the next couple of weeks i fancy a roving approach, thanks.

Always done well using big Mepps, not a lure i know but very good and cheap to boot! You'll also catch perch, zander or chub just to spice things up a little.

The copper coloured one has very rarely let me down, always got a few in my box.

If you want a big spinner type lure either silver or gold, with or without pattern and with red wool, you really cannot beat the Rublex Ondex in size 6 or bigger....

Surely it depends on the type and depth of venue Johns fishing????? Doesn't it!!!;)

Are you on a river or a lake, deep water or shallow, from a boat of from bank......?

Yes mate, will be targeting a few slow deep pools.
Thanks for the advice,i will be in the tackle shop in the morning and then on the river in the afternoon.
On the mepps i use them in the early summer for the Sea trout and often catch plenty of Chub, though with these low temps i would imagine they may be slowing up now and wont be as inclined to chase a bait.

That's the great thing about Mepps, they work at various speeds, not just cranking them in quick!

Never got on with the Ondex for some unknown reason?!

Am a big fan of Blue Fox spinners also, they make a ticking noise (or similar) as you retrieve them.

Blue Fox spinners - that brings back memories. Bought my first one of those in a shop in Bangalore, the Murrel (striped snakehead) in the Kaveri loved them!

the best summer chub lure is a nils master floating minnow, the chub hit em hard, so hard in fact, i stopped using em, the chub were getting damaged because they were hitting the lure really hard, i found it a little barbaric.

Pike in deep pools on the river . . . .

I'd go for a big spoon like an Abu Atom or a Blair spoon which will allow you to search the depths with a variety of retrieve patterns. ;)

Hmmm, lures..lots to look at and buy in the various online sweetie shops. I've caught many pike on dawgs worked very slowly in cold conditions, (the Diawa Sonic Tails are a good price), and various jerkbaits. But if I had only room for one lure it would be a 3"-4" shad. Brilliant action that you can work shallow, or work it deeper jigged on and off the bottom in cold conditions. Relatively cheap also.
