Longham/river stour

Hi all, been down to the grandparents this eve in bearwood and stumbled on a free stretch of the stour looked stunning and couldn't believe it's free! Big roach and huge chub seen just wondering if anyone knows it and had much success, barbel chub roach perch or otherwise just looks a cracking place to fish.compared to my local rivers a totally different kettle of fish, no pun intended hahaha!?

Hi Matt,
not sure what you're used to, but Longham free stretch is a right sh*t hole if you ask me..Having said that, there are some good fish present, though how they survive the "angling" that goes on there is a mystery to me..

Top tip: Don't wander off and leave your gear unattended!

good luck, Tim

Ok cheers for the heads up! I was referring to the size and nature of the river compared to my local rivers loddon and blackwater, I guess any free stretch is going to attract certain undesirables just thought id ask, can't see me going enough times to warrant joining cac or rdaa on top of other local tickets, cheers Tight lines

Love a bit of Urban 'Hard Core' fishing, my roots from a lad in Bristol and some of the places we have fished and caught well gives me immense satisfaction to fish such places.

Don't worry about the fear of being mugged or whatever everyone knows that an angler is a fearsome opponent that is best left alone:)

Really sad to hear the derogatory stuff about Longham. I used to fish it back in the 80s and I loved the place. Got my pb roach and barbel from there, and the roach is still my pb. I actually did used to leave my gear unattended when I went for breakfast at a nearby cafe, never had a problem.
Remember some really nice people used to fish there. Once had an angler stopped
and ask me how I was doing. Told him I had had a barbel, but was finding it hard to keep them in the swim. He looked at my bait selection, grabbed an empty bait box and tipped about 2 pints of hemp in it, saying 'that should help'. Will never forget that.
Only ever had one row there. Three lads who belonged to the club that had the stretch down stream from the weir were catching barbel and walking them down below the weir to return them. Not very fair!
Also used to fish the Muscliff free stretch, which runs from Northbourne to the Throop, was another nice stretch then.
Is Longham really a poo hole, or is it not as safe and pleasant as some pricey club or syndicate waters. I would give it a go, but obviuosly look after yourself.

I remember visiting Muscliff in the early 90's, my buddy had a pb 6+ chub, first chuck, then we struggled for the rest of the day. On dusk we watched a shoal of very large roach, (biggest I've seen) rolling on the far bank. We had no bait to attract them and it was our last day there. :(
It looked a lovely stretch of water.
