landing net

any advice on which landing net to upgrade to?
using the drennen specialist 22" solid frame one at the moment which i find a little shallow for resting the fish..plus when on your own trying to get the fish in it its bit like one of those handheld games when you have to roll the ball bearing into the hole:D
looking for something bigger but not ott of a decent build quality
any thoughts:)

looked at the gardener one and also the korum latex spoon and also the rovex spoon
side by side opted for the rovex 31" one in the end,
the latex mesh on the korum makes the net a lot heavier and it seems the rovex is stronger than the gardner...time may prove me wrong tho:rolleyes:
looked at the gardner landing net handle and that does look about as sexy as a handle gets and will be next on my list after the drennen specialist one i have finally gives in..which wont be long as the extending part has cracked after only a few outings:mad: so its now a 12" extend only handle:( right piece of overpriced junk

BTW i have just noticed the spreader block shown on the review photo was not on the gardener one i looked at..it was the correct net but the block was very different..very flimsy, however the rovex net i got, the spreader block is the same as the review photo of the gardener even down to the two screws

Simon,

I use a Wychwood net sold as a "Pike Boat Net"....good size, very strong, not heavy and good depth of net for resting fish...Beware of one thing, the shielded thread will not permit use with overly large diameter net handle. It will take the Drennan handle however...

I use a korum barbel spoon and also a fox predator net great nets but not foldable like the classic tri net.
Just wish some company did one with the latex mesh but no one does.

Interested to hear you have a Fox Predator net Jon, I have the smaller one which I use for Tench and have been quite impressed. I've earmarked the larger one as a replacement for my Barbel fishing if and when my Wychwood passes on....

When fishing alone , netting a fish in a bit of flow, which on occassions cannot be avoided, I find a deep net very difficult to handle, therefore I prefer a shallow net which is much easier (less resistance).
I often fish on fairly high banks so rest and release fish from the landing net. Some deep nets make releasing a larger fish very difficult causing unneccessary stress to the fish.Cant believe I am alone on this.

Freefow mesh ??? is there really such a thing or are we being taken for numpties again ?

Less.drag imo on the rubberized nets. I have also noticed that they cause less harm imo.
Bill the fox predator net is very good, free flow, strong, light and deep. Like I said before shame. No company does something similar as a tri net.

Each to his own Mark.
I, like you and most other anglers have tried a miriad of different nets and (so far) have found this net to be brilliant.
I fish the Dorset Stour, Hants Avon and the Wye and have experienced none of the problems you refer to :(

Mark, I assumed you were referring to my post which was only 3 before yours mate.
Check out the link in that post;)
I stand by this net. It is fish freindly and as a bonus great value ;)

has anyone had a look at the new wychwood folding net? looks very good two different sizes and has a magnet net keep on it.

I like the idea of the folding wychwood its new out I think as no one seems to have stock.
still using my Leslie insight net, heavy but sturdy with a deep net for resting fish. trying to cut my kit down a bit so a lighter folder would be handy.
I carry way too much kit:eek:

Korum do a rubberised oval net quite happy with that. Hangs off the back of my ruck so easy to carry

The previously mentioned Wychwood folding net is in the shops now.Not rubberised but made of a shake'n'dry material.Magnet gadget works ok and is useful.Much more positive method of locking in place than the Abu which is famous for automatically folding at the wrong time.RRP for the 30inch is £24.99.

I have been through 2 of the Gardner barbel nets, both of which aren't up to the job if you ask me. The speader block is badly designed as the screws work loose. It should be riveted. I superglued them in place initially, but they still eventually came out. Then I riveted it which was great at first but then the frame eventually gave way and snapped without me being wreckless.
I now use a Korum latex barbel spoon net - they are a bit heavier but they are big, deep, dry quickly, and don't smell. Good for winter Pike fishing as well as the mesh won't rip.

If you want it to last buy the Insight because its built to last
