Kryston merlin 15lb fast sinking braided hooklink. Does any one still use this stuff I’ve used it years ago but seems there is some newer stuff out now any reviews would be great
Hi Robert - I use it on combi rigs but only very short lengths 2-3 " and even then I attach a really small pva sock to the hook to prevent tangles on the cast.
In terms of reliability, no issues the way I use it but for longer hooklinks I suspect you could get tangles as it is so supple, but a sock might sort this out.
I’ve been using Merlin for maybe over 20 years in 10, 12 & 15lb in green for various species. Like Paul I only tend to use it in combi-rigs for barbel, maybe 4” at most. I’m still using the older/lighter green variant, I gather the newer version is a fraction darker. I think it’s great stuff, very supple and it knots well. I carry two makes of braid in my barbel tackle box; Merlin and Drennan Sinkbraid both in 12 & 15lb. When I run out of Sinkbraid I’ll probably try the new brown coloured Merlin.
I’ve used longer hooklengths for carp and haven’t found tangling an issue, I don’t fish at long distances and try and keep my casting smooth and I always feather down. It’s also brilliant for short 3” hooklengths when method feeder fishing for tench in weedy swims.
