Korum Hooks.

Hi All,
Anyone using the Korum Hooks, I was looking at the Xpert Power and the Expert Specialist? The patterns look fine and the price is very good...
 
I have used them since they came out and find them very good for places like the Wye or Severn.

I would only use them where the general stamp of fish is up to 10-11 lb

If I was trying for a lump I would use something more robust;)
 
Are they to thin in the wire or something Keith?
 
They are quite thin in the wire but I've had plenty of fish on them without any signs of opening out, however I have binned some because of faults on the eye resulting in the braid being cut. The wire seems to be flattened in the bending process and this results in a sharp edge inside the bend, you can feel it 'catching' as you draw the braid through. They also can suffer from the poorly closed eye problem, guess you get the quality that you pay for!
 
I used the seamless ones when they first came out,after a couple of lost fish due to straightening out binned em.
 
I have used the Korum Power hooks on two sessions on the Middle Trent over the weekend, 20 fish to 10-06 and no problems with the hooks.
Seem to be good value IMHO. :)
 
A crying shame that they discontinued the old S4 and S5 styles. I've used them for several years with confidence. I particularly like the "welded" Seemless eye which gives me total confidence with my knotless knot. Problem is I'm beginning to run low on my stock and even on eBay they are not easy to come bye in the the sizes I use.
 
Not very glowing reports, but as you say i suppose you get what you pay for, pity though nice price and a good range of sizes, will have a look at the expert power ones though as they are supposed to be the strongest in the range...

Agreed. I had about 17 barbel on the same hook whilst fishing caster on the Trent a couple of years ago! I'm out now. Haven't yet found a replacement i'm entirely happy with for big fish in size 14 or so.

Pal had a couple of the new ones straightened by barbel recently.
 
John, Ive been using the Korum expert power hooks and had no problems, biggest fish on them so far was the 13lb 5oz barbel from the upper trent, which meant I was battling the fish and a good flow, as well as a few other 9lb + fish and a couple of doubles to boot
 
Ricky thank you for that info i have ordered a couple of packs of the expert power and i will give them a go...You seem to have given them a testing and had no problems...
 
Not sure about that Cliff im waiting for some to arrive Matey...

SNAP! this was been discussed on facebook couple of weeks back.
people tried to get in touch about them and got no response.

lots of reports of them snapping too, i snapped one while tightening a knot. nice hook and shape but always in your mind if it will hold out, then the eye issue too.

i have moved on even if it costing me a little more
 
I bought up all the old Korum S3's that I could get my hands on. I reckon I've got enough to see my barbelling days out!
 
Nothing quite so emotive as hooks. If I go fishing with a few mates, chances are that we will all be using different brands and would all swear by them!
I think the quality of hooks in general has come on leaps and bounds since the seventies.
I remember one of my first excursions to the Royalty in the late seventies, and buying a pack of Drennan size 10's, [ In the pink packet ] for trotting.
It did'nt take long before the hook was straightend by a relatively small barbel.
The pack had a barbel on the front for Christ sake!
Still, life's a constant learning curve so they say.

I have'nt tried the latest Korum hooks as I am happy with what I am currently using,..but I did have an S3 open out on an 8 lb river carp a few years back which put me off them for barbel fishing.
I like the Fox Arma SSBP in 10's for caster, and ESP Raptors T-6 and D-7's for boilies and paste,..Still have some Kamasan B725's as well.
I guarantee that some will prefer other brands and patterns , but until one lets me down or they are discontinued they will do.

As you say, Dave - hooks are a very personal thing. I think all anglers of a certain age will have a 'graveyard' stock of old hooks that we once swore by, will never ever use again and for some nostalgic reason cannot summon up the courage to throw them away. I know for a fact that I've got some Mustad size 24 gilt hooks purchased some time in the 1970's!

I've just had a look in my ''graveyard'' and spotted these amongst countless other bits and bods that I will never use again....must date back to the eighties, and were used for my pike deadbait traces. [ OK,..I admit it,.. trotting a single maggot! ]:D
