is it chub

hi all, i've finally managed to get back on with you guys (was broseleyneil) & loving every minute on.
i've got a problem though with bites, the thing is whilst fishing i keep getting the odd 'bang', not a proper wrap round as a 'normal' barbel bite goes. now i thought they may be liners but now & again my pellet has gone whether it be a 14mm hard halibut or a soft 11mm pellet. now can these be chub feeling the weight of my feeder or lead or do you think my 1 to 2 inch hairs are too long. i fish a fairly shallow piece of the severn at the moment until later on in the season when i drop to the deeper stretches.
all that said i have only this year beeen fishing the shallower pieces & have never had this problem before on the deeper. i have (just to add) not changed any of my set up, hook patterns etc. for this season from last.

please try & help me as its doing my head in

should i try a soft pellet on the hook as opposed to a hair, but would the fish that don't do this 'bang thing' shy away.

thanks all

thanks dave but i have caught more barbel on other baits than i ever have with meat so i tend to not use it so much now.

Yes it probably is chub and the longer your hair, the less of them you will catch!

A 2 inch hair seems really long to me....BUT
I am a bit of a novice...so probably best not to take much notice of me !!!!!!!
I am forever getting those "chubby" knocks...really frustrating...but keeps you on your toes!!!!!!:)

Pellet pinchers

Hi Neil,
I've had this problem on the W/Avon where there is a prolific head of small chub who peck at the bait until it breaks up or is dis-lodged. Cured this by using Korda bait stops ( the ones shaped like cow horns ) they come in three sizes but I prefer the small one. I defy any chub to dislodge the bait with one of these attached so they have to give up or really 'go for it' in which case you will hook them. I also used a short hair but I don't really know if this helped. Worked for me anyway,
Tight Lines,
Graham.

Neil. A superglued bait generally won't come off from Chub, you could try that. But I am surprised you have not hooked any todate. I fish the bait just below the bend of the hook.

Is there much of an eel run on the Severn at the moment...there are quite a few on the Wye.

Graham

Dear Neil chub are well known for picking your the bait in their lips, if you are fishing a hair I suggest you use a short hair with the bait virtually on the shank, even then you will no doubt miss some chub. If its a barbel you want to fish a hair about an inch, then ignore the other taps. I suggest if you do get the taps try holding the rod then as you feel a tap push the rod forward giving some line. Often if its a barbel, the slack will be taken up. Then set the hook. Barbel don't all give three foot twitches. I hope this helps Regards Martin

Almost certainly chub.

I think Graham's tip is best for converting bites to hooking, on a hair, tight to the bend or bottom of the shank. A longer hair is not necessarily the answer to avoiding chub; I switched to this a few seasons ago specifically to convert bites from the bigger, cagier chub. It worked, but I find no arrangement has had real consistency?

Other than a bolt-rig with a short, stiff link to a Circle hook, that is.....;)

Which is also excellent for barbel too, funnily enough?

thanks for that lads, i will try shorter hairs, but as i say they are not taps as such, they are more of a 'wollop' & quick as a flash.

graham,
yes mate a lot of eels are being caught, on the too. not big fish though, 2-3lb are what i am hearing about off the night anglers & campers. i lost what i think was an eel last week on a soft hemp & hali pellet. apparently too they have a liking for corn fished below a hali GB feeder mix.

Have to agree with Martin here, if you really want to find out if the plucks are chub or barbel then hold the rod and line, with practice you will 'feel' it coming and set the hook - a good percentage will be barbel plucks not chub knocks as previously thought!

A couple of other things to try, band the hard pellet to the back of the hook, and fish it upstream, use as light a lead as you can, the bangs will be followed by a big drop back, works really well for chub, if you don,t like bait bands, use as short a hair as you can, and for best results use 2 pellets.

This is definately a bite that eels will give as well as chub. Fishing meat at Throop last week produced eels in every swim, and they picked up the bait and went backwards resulting in a violent pull on the rod top, but they released it straight away so there was no chance of connecting. Not that I would want to connectwith an eel.
I thought they were supposed to be endangered!

Hi Neil...lovin the name:p 2'' hairs are a bit long ,actually way too long I think, Chub are really deft at removing pellets, even on a short hair. Dont rule out meat, the reason you are doing better on pellet than meat is that you don't use meat perhaps? For me meat gets more interest from piccy fish, and can make all the difference. I get being plagued by eels aagghhh on meat, so I use a huge size 4 or 2 buried in the meat,(not hair rigged), eels cant get their small mouths round such a bit bait, generally.

Try loads of hemp too, at dusk just hang on to your rod

neil
don't get me wrong about the meat thing, i've always got it with me & will give a chuck or two, its just that i tend to to get better results on the pellet.

colin
now then there's a thought, there are a lot of eels being caught on & around this are at the moment so its something i'll have to think about.

i know eels are a ,blooming' nuisence somethimes & make such a mess of things but a good eel can give a good scrap now & again.
