I stumbled across this old Great Universal catalogue page from 1978 on social media earlier and thought might interest some...

Thanks for the memories!

Between 1970 and 1972 I bought an ABU Ferralite Mk. 6, ABU 506 and Mitchell 300 with my combined paper round and Saturday job money. At the catalogue prices that over £70. To put that in perspective I started a proper job in 1973 and the weekly wage was only £13.10.

And I bet after 50 years (that's if you still have it) the 506 is still running as sweet as a nut.

I still have the 300 and 506. They both run well and the 506 has the anti reverse intact.

The rod broke and I got a few more years out of it after repairing the blank. Can't remember how or when we parted company. My other purchase from the same era was a Ernie Stamford swing tip rod. I gave that away and have regretted it ever since.

Because I’m an odd individual I spent a few minutes.

A £70 rod an reel combo in 1972, would be the equivalent of spending £1072 today.

The average house price in 1970 was about £4K, or £60k. Average house price in 2021, 270k…
I did the paper round 7/7 and on Saturdays doubled back to the shop to collect my wages before going down the road to Currys where I assembled bikes and did other odd jobs. The manager let me leave at 5:20 so I could get up to the tackle shop before it closed. I would buy my bait and leave a fiver or so on my card towards the rods and reels I bought with the savings.
