Imitation baits

Thinking of giving them a go this year in a couple of places where tiddlers are a real menace but, aside from lures for pike and perch, I've never used artificials before.

Loads of different makes available - is there any one make I should stick to, or are they much of a muchness? The price difference between, for example, similar selection packs from Enterprise and NGT is quite significant, but surely they're all made from much the same materials?

Advice and pointers appreciated, cheers.

Hi Steve,
I have had lots of success with imitation corn for tench and bream, and often tip a hair mounted boilie with fake corn when after carp.
Last year I tried fake maggot and caster for barbel and chub whilst the minnows were a problem on real baits. Didn't catch either, but did have some nice roach and dace.
My advice, stick to enterprise, they make good baits that work and the price is not important because you use them over and over.
Don't forget, you can also soak them in your favourite flavoured dip.

Enterprise tackles fake grubs are far superior to some other ones I've tried, they seem to sit better if mounted on the hook than others, probably because they're very soft rubber. The casters however are better hair rigged

My son got 100 fake Corn in various colours and a 100 fake grub and maggot of Ebay from a Chinese seller. They look and smell the same a the Enterprise ones, probably made in the same factory. Each pack of 100 cast 99p incl. He seems to catch a good mix with them down the Canal but am the exact opposite.

Anyone had any success on fake hemp? Enterprise do some that look the part, but have never seen anyone say they've caught on it.

You may be right Iain, but what are you going to do with 200 plastic baits? :) I'm still using the same few I bought years ago. Yet to try them for river fish, but great for tench and crucians.

He sold them in batches to his mates at 20 for a quid. He kept back a mixed lot for himself. Unlike me i can't remember the last time he bought live Maggots

You cannot beat the Drennan fake Maggots and Castors, far more realistic than any other I have tried.

And they do work on rivers;)

Enterprise mould all their own baits in the UK :)
