Hydro power at Topcliffe Weir

Hi Guys. As some of you may know Leeds DASA have accepted a proposal for an Archemedean Screw to be installed at Topcliffe Weir on the river swale. Many of us are very concerned about the possible effects this may have on the local community and wildlife. We are in the process of raising and submitting objections to the planning application. I would appreciate it if anyone has any experience they may have of these devices local to you that you would be willing to share.
Thanks.

Dave Harvey of the Thames Angling Conservancy will be able to help you.
He may see this post however you can go on their website and go through the various posts. Loads of info.

These hydro schemes are a disaster for any river they are put on, they produce very little energy and are basically a fish mincer and habitat destroyer.

Watch this very informative video on them, then decide if you'd like one on a weir near you.

I had objected to the scheme when originally announced - the report that came back from the EA was a mealy mouthed office based survey.

The scheme in place on the Derwent (Howsham Mill) has chewed up fish and the outlet is now causing the opposite back to collapse due to the redirection of flow in certain water conditions.

There is one of these screws on the Yorkshire Ouse at Linton on Ouse , I have also visited several others around and about . All of them are very noisy , they inevitably chop smaller fish up and will further impede fish movement unless a fish pass is constructed or is already present . As an overall example of sustainability and green credentials I think these schemes are at best questionable . Interestingly and rather worryingly ,the screw at Linton is right next to the existing salmon ladder . I wonder how many travelling fish make the wrong decision and get the chop ? This said I presume there is some sort of screen to prevent larger fish entering .Nevertheless it must be confusing for migratory fish
