Hooks for meat

I use Owner C4 hooks for my barbel fishing but they are too short in shank for burying in meat for trundling. What type & size do you recommend me to try...? I do need in turned eye as find straight points blunt easily.

Drennan Super Specialist (cheap, cheerful and brilliant) or Kamasan B980 (slightly finer wire). One little trick with big pieces of meat is to soften a short length of stiff rig tubing (the stuff from the good old days) and shove it over the eye of the hook to extend the shank.

If its buried in the meat, it shouldn't come in contact with the river bed anyway, so it shouldn't matter.

I use any strong large 'carp' hooks.
If you look around your local tackle shop, they often have the bigger sized on the bargain bucket, as they don't well so easily.

I normally pay around £1 per pack for mine.......

Size 8:eek:, for rolling/trundling?

Size 1's and 2's, and if I'm out of those I use 4's at a push...

Smaller lumps of meat works on the stretch of river I fish this method on with most barbel only in the 2-4lb bracket. Tin of meat can last all evening. Size 6 if they're really having it!

Do you wrap lead wire around the hook? How much lead wire can you get on a size 8 or 6?

Does the meat stay on ok, when your casting it up stream?

I struggle, a, with holding the meat on when casting up stream, and b, not having enough weight on the hook to enable me to roll/trundle properly.

Middy meat hooks have a hair-rigged spiral wire which is superb for holding meat. If prefered the spiral can be used with any hook of your choice.

No need for lead on the hook and not so much a cast as a gentle underarm lob from a wading position mid-river. (Bank access nigh on impossible). Swim is only around 2-3 feet deep by mid-summer and clean gravel/sand runs in between weed beds. Seems to run down ok and I catch a few fish.

Neil,
What size of T West hooks do you use...? Have found my old supply of Au Lion D'r 1534 hooks in garage...so using some of them for now. Thanks for your replys...:)

If you are using small lumps of meat then the drennan super specialists or drennan barbel hooks are fine, for big lumps i use raptors in various sizes depending on the lump of meat i am using.

Tried trundling with 4's 1534 hooks with barb pressed down. Had some fun with chub pinching meat but enjoyed it on a low & sunny River Dane.
